In 2014, System D celebrated its 90th anniversary! A long life of passion, innovation, discovery and complicity with its readers. Time travel…
1924/1935 THE BEGINNINGS
Number 1, with a "D" as a resource. On its cover, the weekly, which will become monthly thereafter, displays its profession of faith: to learn all trades to its readers.
It has 16 pages illustrated with engravings. And already, the tricks hold a prominent place as, below, the realization of a nut-clamp using a reformed bike chain.
1935/1945 FOR MAKING YOURSELF
In these years, craftsmen themselves design a good part of their tools. The adept of the system D - the expression is passed in the current language - had to manufacture its own lathe. It is also the time when the "Fairy Electricity" excites all the imaginations: why
do not tinker with an electric toaster? (below).
1945/1955 TIPS ON 64 PAGES
I have an old bike pedals and I need a chignole... thank you System D. The first waterproof camera-box is invented by Georges Beuchat in 1950? As soon as System D proposes his to the dimensions of a "device like Leica".
It supports the water pressure up to 30 to 50 m deep.
1955/1965 MAJOR WORK
The time has come for reconstruction since the end of the war. The weather is also at the week-ends found and the first habitable house proposed by the magazine is a pied-à-terre in wood, built at the edge of a lake.
1965/1975 WE ARE DISTRIBUTED
Barbecue, telescope... The Glorious Thirties are in full swing and leisure activities are developing. The photos have replaced the old engravings, allowing readers to admire the handyman's sportswear (pajamas, "marcel" and slippers), very proud to demonstrate the (award-winning) rowing machine he built and who adorns his living room.
1975/1985 ON OSE ALL
A woman in her bath? Why not if it is to present a beautiful niche in the deck of the bathtub. As for the caravan "handmade", it is folding and seduces many readers if one believes the mail that followed the publication of construction plans. Bravo for the design and aerodynamics that do not leave indifferent.
1985/1995 WITH A FEW YEARS IN ADVANCE...
The oil crises have passed through there. We already talk about thermal diagnosis in the pages of the magazine that advocates energy savings before the expression is passed in everyday language. It also protects its property as illustrated by this "gate-levant" inspired rail crossing barriers. A concept today abandoned in favor of sliding gates and motorized.
1995/2005 WOMEN ARE THEM, THEY ALSO
On the blankets, it is now two that we develop or that we restore a house. It was time, ladies, that we finally recognize your talents. Problem # 1 of modern couples: lack of space. Hence the assured success of magazine covers offering original "storage solutions". Crafts and small creative DIY, them either, are not forgotten.
