Some junctions are sometimes difficult, if not impossible to achieve by welding, bolting or gluing. If this is the case, the installation of rivets "pop" is a good solution, especially when one of the faces of the assembly is not accessible.
в-Џ To attach a license plate, use colored rivets: white for the front, yellow for the rear. Designed for thick plastic bumpers, they burst at the back as a "flower" leaning on the inner wall.
в-Џ If you have to rivet a sheet metal on a plastic support whose back is accessible, insert the rivet in the holes and place on the back a washer of the same diameter as the body. Riveting will compress it and strengthen the assembly.
Traditional riveting consists of clamping two pieces between the head of the rivet and a second head, called "rivure", obtained by hammering. But this process involves reaching both sides of the assembly. Reason for which it is commonly replaced by the "pop" rivet, or blind, designed to work on the only accessible side. It consists of a cylindrical body, deformable alloy provided with a stop collar and axially crossed by a rod with a ball-shaped head.
в-Џ The size of the rivets is characterized by the diameter (3, 4, 5 mm) and the length of their body, which depend on the thicknesses to be assembled, increased by 5 mm. The shape of the collar can be flat, wide or milled. The size of the stem varies according to the size of the rivet. The choice of the model, made entirely of aluminum or aluminum and steel, depends on the desired mechanical resistance and the resistance to corrosion. The installation requires a special clamp.
The two parts to be joined, here an aluminum sheet and a U-shaped section, are held in position by clamping collets and drilled together. The diameter of a hole is equal to that of the body of the rivet, increased by a tenth of a millimeter. Example: for a Ø 4 mm rivet, a Ø 4.1 mm drill is required.
в-Џ The installation is carried out using a tip (chosen from four models) which is screwed into the nose of the clamp. It receives the rod, while the body of the rivet is introduced into the drilling of the pieces.
в-Џ The tip pressed against the collar, the riveting is done in two stages. A first pressure, exerted on the arms of the clamp, pulls the rod: it deforms the body and inflates the blind part at the back.
в-Џ The arms are then released to push back the tip on the stem, from 4 to 5 mm. Just press it again on the collar and operate the clamp again to break the stem flush and finish the riveting. The arms are spread apart to extract the remaining rod end, which comes out at the back.
в-Џ To remove a "pop" rivet, it must be drilled axially with a drill of diameter equal to that of the body, then push it back with a pin punch of suitable caliber.
Pop rivets and interchangeable bit pliers
Some rivets "pop" among the most common: simple flange, wide, waterproof, colored. They are accompanied by a special clamp equipped with a set of four interchangeable tips.
Drill aluminum plate and profile
The aluminum sheet and the U-shaped profile are clamped together by means of a vise clamp. They are clamped on the workbench for precise drilling. The diameter of the drill is equal to that of the rivet, plus 1 / 10th of a millimeter.
Select and screw on the appropriate tip
Of the four models supplied with the clamp, select the tip corresponding to the gauge of the rod. Screw it on the nose of the latter by tightening with a wrench.
Choose the right rivet and put it in the mouthpiece
Choose the right rivet (diameter, material, flange), with a body length equal to the thickness of the two parts to be assembled, increased by 5 mm. Simply put his rod in the mouthpiece.
Prime the river
With the body of the rivet placed in the hole through the two pieces, press on the nose of the pliers and plate the flange against the sheet. Then operate the arms of the tool to start the river.
Bring the tip in contact with the collar
Release the arms to push the nose back, and squeeze the head of the pliers to slide the tip onto the stem and bring it back into contact with the collar. Move your arms closer.
Under the action of the forceps, the rod pulls on the body and compresses it: deformed, it takes the appearance of a small bulb. Continue pressing the arms to break the stem flush with the collar.
Remove the rivet rod
Once assembled, the rivet pin is no longer needed and comes out of the back of the tool when you extend your arms as far as possible. Just print shakes to make it fall.
