Choosing the right tarpaulin for your pond is important. Because it is she who ensures the sealing and therefore the sustainability of your pond. It must withstand UV and cold for several years. Its installation requires fingering and meticulousness and according to its quality this operation will be more or less easy. While she tarpaulin choose for your pond: PVC Tarpaulin, Tarpaulin E.P.D.M. or composite tarpaulin?
The PVC tarpaulin
The PVC tarpaulin for polyvinyl chloride is a thermoplastic polymer. She is the cheapest tarps but surely not the easiest to ask.
You find it in a roll of 4.6 or 8 meters wide. PVC strips are easy to weld or bond to each other, allowing you to have widths beyond the standard 8m.
Its thickness is 0.5, 0.8 or 1 mm. From the outset opt for the thickest. The others are too fragile.
Its life expectancy varies between 5 and 15 years depending on its thickness.
- Advantages of PVC tarpaulin:
Its easy to weld PVC strips together.
Its ease of repair if it breaks (patching).
- Disadvantages of PVC tarpaulin:
Although flexible, it lacks flexibility. And it does not return to its original form when stretched which is source of fragility and folds.
PVC is sensitive to frost, which causes it to crack and heat to soften it.
You can only ask it if the temperature is above 0°.
In the long run, UV denatures and the chemicals that compose it can migrate into the water of your pond.
PVC is not recyclable.
The E.P.D.M. for Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Monomer is an elastomer. Elastomers are better known by the usual name of rubber. If it is more expensive than the PVC tarpaulinthey offer many benefits.
You find it in a roll of 4, 6, 9,12 and up to 15 m wide.
Its thickness varies from 1 to 1.4 mm.
It has a lifespan of up to 50 years and is at least 15 to 20 years old.
- Advantages of the E.P.D.M.
Its elongation and elasticity make it much easier to install than PVC tarpaulin. It makes fewer folds.
And it arises regardless of the temperature.
It is very resistant to UV and temperatures (-30° to + 90°).
It can be glued on wood, metal or concrete.
It is recyclable.
- Disadvantages of the E.P.D.M.
Its price is higher than that of PVC tarpaulin.
It is also heavier.
She is sensitive to oil, gasoline and some chemicals.
Be careful, never use an E.P.D.M. for roofing in your pond. Their composition is different and the roof covering is totally incompatible with aquatic life.
The composite cover
The composite cover consists of a nonwoven polypropylene web between layers of polymeric membranes. Its filament structure (non-woven) gives it a very high mechanical strength. In case of tear, it does not extend. In case of drilling, it remains waterproof until the object has been removed.
You find it in roll up to 20 m wide.
- Benefits of the composite tarpaulin:
She is very light. It's even the lightest tarpaulin.
It is very resistant to tears and piercings.
It is very resistant to UV, frost and heat.
It is ecological: It is inert in water, air, soil and is recyclable.
- Disadvantages of the composite tarpaulin:
It is a little more expensive than the E.P.D.M. but hardly...
It is steeper than the E.P.D.M. It is easier to fold when laying.
Good to know: Why are waterproof tarpaulins and preformed basins dark in color? This accentuates the impression of depth and the reflections are more intense. In addition, your pond is alive and very quickly deposits and algae will in any case darken the bottom and walls.
