Rebuilding an attic destroyed by fire to create a comfortable space dedicated to relaxation: this is the successful challenge of Rémi Le Tellier after more than a year of work.
It was after a fire that devastated part of his house that Rémi Le Tellier undertook this project: "While we cleared the attic, we thought we could develop it in the lounge... I did not really make plans, I had everything in mind: an open space, in mezzanine, which was not the case before. " Apart from the framework and the cover implemented by professionals, our reader has transformed the space by force of will and sacrifices. And this achievement is particularly close to his heart: "Sometimes I have been supported by my children and my friends, but overall, everything is the result of my work. " A job that started with the construction of the floor...
Only ruins remained after the fire. "We evacuated most of the rubble, the same day, with the firefighters. "
A space bathed in natural light
For this renovation carried out in the respect of the local tradition, our reader used materials of recovery. After the laying of the floor, the other realization of choice is the implementation of the staircase to measure, with wooden stair nosing and covered with tiling. To make the most of the natural light, two double-glazed roof windows and workshop type steel frames are installed: "Their pose requires two or three people because they are quite heavy. They are also more expensive than conventional roof windows, but in terms of aesthetics, it has nothing to do! " The light also penetrates by the old dovecote: "I cleaned it and put a double glazing made to measure from the template of the existing opening. " On the finishing side, our reader preferred plaster-coated walls ("Because I like plaster! "). He entrusted the application to a pro, but realized himself the coating of lime... "My son insisted on keeping a stone wall. "
In this new space, very bright, our reader will soon replace the carpet with parquet...
Home and fire insurance
Compensation after fire: the school of patience
Home insurance covers fire risk more or less effectively depending on the company. The steps are often long and tedious. Especially since the fire is important. You have five days to declare the claim. Then you must write a full and accurate description of the damage, providing photos and estimate the amount for each damaged object. The expert then comes into play. It is only after the validation by the insured and the insurer of the expert report that the compensation intervenes. Tip: do things in order and be patient.
Realization of the roof
In the houses of the South of France, the frames are not complex: a ridge tip and two sanders rest on the gables. On the other hand, large litters require specific equipment. That's why our reader has hired professionals.
The cover is made in tile recovery channel. Implementation in two stages: their concave face forms parallel channels for the evacuation of rainwater; their convex face seals. The channel tile then hangs by sliding.
To insulate the roof, our reader chose self-supporting seasoned boxes (with plasterboard underface). The floor is made using solid old beams, which receive a 5 cm thick Douglas fir floor.
Realization of the mezzanine
Upstairs, a reinforced concrete slab solidifies and reinforces the existing masonry.
To set up the heavy roof windows with steel frame, two hoppers are made: "It's not complicated, just cut out the underside panels and put in place the pieces of wood forming the trimmers. "
One of the exposed stone walls is preserved and grouted with a lime mortar and local sand: "We did several tests before finding the right shade. "
Staircase and stairwell
Damaged by the fire, the brick partitions are deposited and rebuilt in cinder block. The opportunity to open more widely the stairwell
The staircase structure is made to measure by our reader. But he chose to call on a professional to make the metal railing, "a great simplicity."
The former dovecote will also be equipped with double glazing made to measure: it will illuminate the staircase.
