A massif is a composition that brings together one or more plant varieties, flowers and / or shrubs in particular. Online, round, square or triangular, it comes in many forms.
The massif allows to embellish the edges of a hedge or below the windows of a house, to border an alley, or to create a parterre for example, and this to promote the aesthetics of the garden.
Varieties for a flower massif
The choice of species for a massif there is again very vast: annual varieties whose flowering occurs once a year, biannuals that give twice a year, perennials that bloom from one year to another, or even shrubby varieties.
Generally, species are mixed in order to have a flowering massif in different seasons, and operating some harmony of colors (usually two to three shades). In addition, it takes into account the adult size of the plants, to give perspective to the massif. Thus, the plants in the foreground have a lower height than those of the second and third planes.
Finally, in addition to his tastes, the gardener must select plants according to their needs. It must ensure that they are adapted to the climatic conditions of the region, but also according to the sun and the nature of the soil where they will be planted. If necessary, varieties may suffer from drought, lack of shade, or cold for example.
Steps to create a flower massif
A group of flowers is created in several stages:

- Soil preparation and planting: The soil must be prepared, that is to say, turned over, exempt from pebbles and roots, and possibly fertilized according to the nature of the soil and the needs of the plants. The holes are then made to accommodate the seedlings and / or seeds, staggered to avoid voids, and according to the management plan, the depth required for each species, and respecting a distance between each plant that allows them to have enough space to develop properly. Plants and / or seeds are then planted and watered, and mulched feet if necessary. Of course, this operation is carried out taking into account the planting period of each species, to avoid the risk of frost in particular;
- Maintenance: Watering and removal of faded flowers in particular, are all actions that promote the growth of plants, the extension of flowering, and which make the massif more beautiful over the years.
