Defogging is an operation that consists of cleaning and descaling the central heating equipment that works with running water. It is more specifically to rid the pipes of the mud that accumulates over time.

What is defogging?

Defogging is a cleaning technique used to maintain a heater. It can also be used to clean a cooling system. The goal is to rid sludge and impurities that clog the network and that have accumulated naturally over uses. The water that passes through the pipes contains various elements and metals (silicate, chloride, sulphate, iron, aluminum, copper...) which are deposited in small quantities and gradually form a sediment.

In addition to hygiene, sludge can affect the proper functioning of heating equipment. Deburring is undertaken both for the sake of hygiene but also to preserve the performance and longevity of the facilities.

Defogging: treated circuits

Deburring therefore generally concerns the central heating system. The de-watering treatment covers not only the heat sources (convector, radiator, floor heating, solar collector) but also the hot water tanks.

It is obligatory to have your boiler serviced each year by a professional heating engineer, but the removal of the water is not an obligation. But the ADEME (Agency for the Environment and Energy Management) recommends doing this operation every 5 years for heated floors and every 7 years for radiators.

The different possible treatments

It is possible to choose between several types of treatment.

  • The chemical method

This technique uses a specific device that is directly connected to the boiler. It diffuses a chemical in the circuit. In case of heavy soiling, the treatment can be extended over many weeks. This method is recommended for very dirty equipment. Injection of chemicals has the advantage of being very efficient and fast.

  • The hydrodynamic technique

This method does not involve any chemical products. It uses a low and high pressure device. The pressure (mixture of water and air) makes it possible to take off the sludge which is then evacuated with clear water.

  • Finally, manual or ecological defoaming

This method uses a special kit including water purification equipment (filter cartridge, electric anti-scale, softeners...). The water is thus freed as the calcium elements, which avoids the deposit of limestone in the pipes and in the circuit.
