A bay block is a window equipped with a shutter. Set back from the lintel, the shutter box becomes totally invisible to preserve the appearance of the facade.

window with roller shutter

Insulation in addition

The roller shutter contributes to the thermal and / or sound insulation of the joinery. The insulation (polystyrene, foam...) takes place in the trunk around the shutter. For increased performance, the blades, made of PVC or aluminum, are also lined with insulation and the slides are equipped with a guide (brush or rubber seal).
Note: the shutter (manual or motorized) does not provide protection against intrusions, its apron can tear in minutes... However, it delays the break-in.

Composed of a frame, one or more openings and a trunk in which is housed a roller shutter, the bay block is a carpentry that displays good thermal performance. It is found in PVC or aluminum and more rarely in wood. Depending on the type of construction site (new, total removal or renovation), it is installed in rebate, wall or tunnel. As for the openings of the window, they are generally swinging, tilt-and-turn or sliding.

Three types of pose

three types of pose

There are three types of installation depending on the site: rabbet, applique or tunnel.
The latter being preferred for large dimensions that require a greater grip.
In all cases, the fixing of the bay-block is done mechanically.
The watertightness and the air permeability are ensured by a strip of adhesive foam type Compriband, a polymer or silicone, able to follow the movements of the seal and to guarantee the performance of the block-bay. Expansive foam is more suitable for redoing an existing degraded insulation.

Why PVC?

Made from salt (57%) and petroleum derivatives (43%), PVC has many advantages. This material is above all a recyclable product with a long life (up to 50 years). It is resistant to water, fire, UV, shock and its maintenance is easy (sponge and non-abrasive product diluted in water). But the main interest of PVC is in its high cost / thermal performance ratio, which is particularly appreciated in the northern regions of France. From an aesthetic point of view, the manufacturers made efforts by proposing finer profiles, but also varied colors and decorations (imitation by plaxage of wood species) which integrate with the various architectural styles. However, if the regulation does not exclude any particular material, it sometimes prohibits a profile section. Just like a municipality or a syndicate of condominiums can refuse PVC. In doubt, it is better to inquire before changing its windows.

Essential glazing characteristics

Among the elements of the bay block, the glazing has an essential role, because it contributes to both the thermal performance and sound of the window.
Initially, the double glazing consisted of two glasses that enclosed a blade of air. Since then, there are also inert gases such as argon, krypton or xenon that provide better thermal resistance. A seal (silicone) traps the air (or gas) while securing the two glasses.
The triple glazing takes the same principle while improving the properties, but the weight is more consequent.
The most common double glazing is 4/16/4. That is to say 4 mm thick glass, 16 mm thick air or gas and again 4 mm glass.
The thermal performance of the glazing can also be enhanced by the deposition (in the factory) of an invisible metal oxide film, applied to the inner face of one of the glasses (this is called low emissivity of a glazing). Its role is to return the infrared waves (heat) emitted by the housing inward while letting penetrate solar inputs (light, heat).

What differentiates a phonic double glazing (even if it retains its thermal performance) is the thickness of a glass and the air gap. The outer glass goes from 4 to 10 mm and the air gap from 16 to 10 mm.

Take into account the coefficients

With regard to thermal insulation, the index to be taken into consideration is the coefficient Uw (U being the heat transfer coefficient of the window). This coefficient is expressed in W (m2.k): watts per square meter of frame and glazing per degree Kelvin (temperature difference between inside and outside). The higher the coefficient Uw is close to 0, the higher the performance of the bay block, which opens the way to aid granted in the context of energy savings. But, it is not useless also to check the thermal performance of the roller shutter. This is characterized by the delta (Δ) R. Unlike the window, the higher the index, the more the shutter is insulating.

Recognize a safety glass

In terms of strength and safety, there are three types of glass: classic, tempered and laminated. The first is everywhere. In case of violent shock, it breaks in big pieces sharp. The second has undergone a treatment that increases its resistance to shocks. It breaks in small pieces, less dangerous. As for the third glass, said of security, it is recommended to delay the break-ins. This glazing incorporates flexible sheets interposed in the layers of glass to strengthen it. During an attempted break-in, the shock wave is distributed over the glass surface. When it yields, it breaks into small pieces that its laminated soul holds back to annoy the burglar if he tries to attack the second glazing. A safety glass is identified by tapping on the back of the phalanx. The sound "full" indicates that it is well anti-rapraction.

Laying windows: do or have it done?

In France, the size "standard" does not exist. In GSB we find the best-selling sizes (135/125/115/105/95 x 100 or 120 mm), but when speaking to a professional, the window is custom-designed to the nearest millimeter.
Whether you decide to entrust the installation to a professional (some installer networks also guarantee the installation) or ask yourself, the block-bay has a ten-year warranty. In the event of an anomaly, it is necessary to address the installer who must solve the problem - until the change of the carpentry if the situation warrants it - or directly to the manufacturer, proof of purchase in support. Finally, note that the use of a professional can benefit from a reduced rate VAT and a tax credit.

The "windows" labels to know

CE marking is mandatory for placing a product on the market. This is not a sign of quality, but of conformity. To ensure that a carpentry meets the performance announced by the manufacturer (number of chambers in the profiles, metal reinforcements, properties of the glazing, the trunk, its slides and blades), we must be interested in blocks bays that display the NF blocks-bays PVC, CSTB blocks-bays PVC, Acotherm or the Cekal marking for glazing. Factory tested, the entire bay block must meet the standards of the regulations (thermal, acoustic and permeability).

verification of metal reinforcements

If the metal reinforcements are necessary for the certification of a bay block, the way to ensure their presence in the frame (frame) and the opening (frame) is the test of the magnet.

Tax credit for changing windows

To qualify for the 30% of the energy transition tax credit (ISCED), the zero-rate loan (Eco-PTZ) or subsidies (Anah, regional...), the bay block must display a Uw coefficient ranging from 1 and 1.8 W / m²K. The most common coefficient on the market is 1.4 W / m²K. To obtain these aids and a reduced VAT rate, it is necessary that the selected bay block is posed by a professional holder of the qualification RGE (Recognized Guarantor of the Environment). The shutter must display a minimum coefficient (ΔR) of 0.22 m².K / W. Below this value, only the performance of the window (Uw) will be taken into account by the tax credit.
