Electric train: training and decor of the network

The method of forming and decorating the electric train network presented here is very simple. It does not involve a preliminary plan or a complex study of the route layout. You just have to buy a train in a complete box, with its oval of rails and its transformer. Add an additional box containing a set of curved and straight rails, switches and a control console for them. It is always possible to add buildings, trees, characters, these items being sold at retail.

Necessary material

  • Hammer
  • Screwdriver
  • Drill
  • Clamps
  • Flat key
  • Wood glue
  • Screw
  • spikes
  • bolts
  • trim
  • brackets
  • Piano hinge
  • Magnetic latches

Steps

  1. Preparation of the support cabinet
  2. Placing and painting reliefs
  3. Incorporation of accessories
  4. Installation of network equipment

Preparation of the support cabinet

Provisional placement of the tracks

Provisional placement of the tracks

1. Temporarily assemble the rails on the running surface to make the network as you like. Start preferably with the curved parts at each end and then insert the straight rails according to the available length. For greater convenience of use, have the station and switches on the front of the network. Attention: here the double track requires rails with different radii of curvature!

Circuit test

2. Once the network is established, provisionally connect the transformer for testing: the train must run normally over the entire network without difficulty. The curves should be regular and the straight rails well aligned. Then pencil the edge of the rails: this line serves as a marker for the ballast during painting operations. Remove the set of rails.

3. Before proceeding, the cabinet must be protected from spray paint. Note on the running surface the reading, done in pencil, of the perimeter of the tracks. Place light green, dark green, brown, yellow, red, and matte black spray paintballs close to hand.

Placing and painting reliefs

Placing reliefs

Placing reliefs

1. Before any painting work, it is necessary to set up the relief. It consists of pieces of expanded polystyrene recovered from packaging.
Glue them directly to the tread at the locations of your choice, apart from the pencil line marking the path.
Create a relief with natural shapes: stack the polystyrene in layers to obtain higher hills, break diagonally, with the fingers, the edges of the falls to make a relief with inclined slopes. Vinyl wood glue is very suitable for bonding polystyrene.

Relief painting

2. Once the relief is in place, start painting. Pass a first layer of dark green base. Paint the entire network, except for the ballast (delimited by the pencil path). In "plain" areas, use light green hints to mark the meadows. The spray can is ideal for applying paint. Shake the bomb before using it, to mix the product well.

Dusting reliefs with flocking

3. Before complete drying of the paint, sprinkle it with small amounts of green flocking, of different shades.

Painting of rocky escarpments

4. Spend a little brown or light ocher on the polystyrene slices, vertical, remaining apparent: they will play the role of rocky escarpment.

Laying of tracks after ballast painting

5. Paint track locations, or ballast, evenly in brown. To give it a real appearance, it must be "aged" by applying matte black in longitudinal keys. Lay the tracks as they were during the preliminary tests. On this network, the two circuits are electrically independent. Select them by inserting two plastic insulating splices between the two switches forming the connecting channel of the two circuits in the station.

Incorporation of accessories

Setting up an accessory

Setting up an accessory

1. To add variety to the network, incorporate accessories such as the container crane. Warning: some accessories must be installed with the tracks! Do not forget this detail before the final installation of the tracks. Secure them with nails (sold especially) or small screws; this solution allows easier disassembly.

Temporary placement of buildings

2. Temporarily put the buildings in place. Arrange them in different ways to judge the effect each time. The best is to try to find a provision corresponding to reality.

3. Once the buildings are in place, take a pencil around the edge. Remove them, and paint the streets and squares in light gray. Paste the location of the buildings and proceed to their final placement.

Installation of network equipment

Drilling for the passage of wires

Drilling for the passage of wires

1. Place the transformers on their designated location in a corner of the network, on the front. Before attaching them, drill the 220 V lead-through holes (with the wall plug) and the 12-volt wires, which feed the switch tracks and control consoles.

Transformer connection

Transformer connection

2. This network, comprising two independent circuits which control the simultaneous circulation of two trains, requires two transformers. Place them side by side.

Special rail connection

Special rail connection

3. Each circuit has a branch rail receiving the two wires (12 V) from the transformer. In the absence of a rail of this type, it is possible to directly solder each wire to its line of rails. Switching the wires reverses the direction of travel of the train in relation to the transformer control: make sure that both circuits work in the same direction for the same control position of the transformer.

Gluing and laying trees

4. Complete the decor with many small accessories: these details bring it to life. Glue the trees and put them in a natural way.

Establishment of hedges and barriers

5. Place the hedges on a bed of glue: they will delimit fields and pastures. The presence of plastic barriers gives an impression of reality (provided not to abuse it).

6. The network is finished. The TGV can make its first tests. On this circuit are arranged, right transformers, desks: they allow remote control of routes, maneuvers and accessories.
