Insulation from the outside thanks to a reported cladding

Insulation with cladding reported is one of the techniques commonly used to reinforce the insulation of the walls of a building from the outside, whether in new constructions or included in a renovation project. A rich technique that offers different methods of implementation possible with a basic principle very simple: add one or two additional layers of insulation using a cladding. The appearance of the facade being modified, it is of course necessary to ask permission before the start of work.

There are several types of cladding reported among which are distinguished in particular those with single network and those with double networks. The double gratings are covered with healds or additional battens which are inserted between the rafters and the final cladding. In addition, the layout of the insulation may also vary. The insulation in one layer can be placed between the rafters or below. The two-layer insulation can either combine the two or maintain the two insulation layers behind the rafters, as is the case with the plank insulation with two layers of wood fiber panels.

On the performance side, the insulation thanks to a reported cladding offers a good rendering as much from the thermal point of view as acoustics. This, without breaking the initial thermal inertia of the wall to isolate as is the case when insulation from the inside. On the contrary, the inertia is even increased. For a wall cladding insulation cladding from a 17.5 cm thick brick wall with a 20 cm mineral wool layer, the obtained U coefficient is estimated at 0, 17 W / m2.K. The thickness of the insulation used and the constitution of the base wall greatly influence the final result.

To sustain the performance of cladding insulation reported over time, it is essential to arrange a blade of air between the insulation and the external skin of your realization. This air gap has a very important role, because it is thanks to it that the water vapor coming from inside can escape. From where a good aeration of the pieces of wood of the structure which makes unnecessary the installation of vapor barrier in addition and protects from damage of moisture.

On the other hand, there must not be any air gap between the insulation and the wall, otherwise there is a risk of condensation inside the wall. However, depending on the type of skin chosen, it may be useful to cover the outer face of the rafters with a sealing strip.

For cladding with two-layer insulation or plank wall, it is necessary to think of installing a metal protection grid to be placed all along the lower part of the cladding so as to prevent entry to rodents that might risk wreak havoc.

The rafters of the cladding are fixed to the wall according to two practices. The first, the direct fixing, is the simplest to realize, but can cause thermal bridges punctually at the level of the rafters. The second, by bracket, space the rafters vis-à-vis the wall and allows to slip insulation, reducing thermal bridges punctual metal attachment points. When laying in two layers with brackets, the ideal is to shift the insulating panels so that the joins do not coincide.
