Beautifying the balcony while enjoying automatic watering and light shows, Yann Lee's successful challenge, which has manufactured multifunctional planters and cleverly-designed space-saving furniture...
Cost: about € 3,000
Time: 6 days
Equipment: screwdriver, drill, jigsaw, router...
What's the point of a balcony if you do not feel at home? Based on this observation, Yann Lee imagined a green space and made four garden furniture (L. 19.50 x 1.35 m), while maintaining a passage area to circulate easily.
The lighting is the decor
Two planters are equipped with colorful LED strips (waterproof). Controllable by infrared remote control, they provide a changing lighting that transforms the balcony into theater scenery at night. On the ground, LEDs are embedded in the decking of exotic wood, screwed on joists that follow the slope necessary for the flow of rainwater. The electric cables and the pipes of the automatic watering are cleverly concealed under the decking.
Integrated technical room
All planters are made on the same principle. They are composed of a structure of exotic wood cleats (60 x 35 mm) on which are screwed the OSB panels (Triply) forming the inner tray. The bottom is in autoclave pine (60 x 40 mm); the cladding and the top frame are exotic wood (like the floor). Main difficulty: the manufacture of access doors to technical rooms and the drawers of one of the planters (the most complex to achieve according to our reader).
Maintenance and security: well thought out
To ensure the maintenance of the networks (drainage of rainwater and watering), Yann Lee installed inspection hatches in the decking and in one of the end planters. As the implementation of the floor raised the floor by 8 cm, our reader had to add a tubular handrail to meet the safety standards of the railing (H. 1.10 m).
1 Manufacture of planters
The walls of the Triply inner boxes (25 mm thick) are screwed onto a structure made of exotic wood cleats (60 x 35 mm) assembled by trunnions with reinforcing brackets. The frame of the top of dressing is screwed on the uprights.
A polyane film is stapled on the inner walls of the bins only. To facilitate the flow of water, the bottom is a grating in autoclave pine, screwed on cleats.
The interior is completely covered with an anti-root membrane, cut to fit perfectly the dimensions of the bins. It is only stapled in upper parts.
All planters are dressed with maçaranduba blades (1. 140 mm), like the floor. On one of them, a board on wheels with frontage imitating a drawer serves to store fertilizer and compost.
The two planters leaned against the facade each include a small technical room with water supply and irrigation system for one, low voltage transformer and waterproof power strip for the other.
2 Distribution of water and electricity on the balcony
One of the planters accommodates a low voltage transformer, a watertight power strip... The electrical wiring goes to the center of the balcony. They feed the leds and two wall outlets.
The automatic watering system (tap, double connector with valve, central watering): to access the water network, the blades at the edge of the wall and guardcorps are mounted on hinges in galvanized steel.
The base of two planters has a rebate of 21 mm (made by the router) in which is integrated a strip of LEDs protected by a white adhesive (Gaffer type): the furniture seems to float above the ground.
3 Realization of balcony accessories
Clever, the clothes rack system! The clothesline is tensioned by a turnbuckle and slides in 4 pulleys screwed into 2 cleats of 60 x 35 mm.
The folding bench consists of 2 boards screwed on 3 sleepers fixed to the wall by hinges.
Two posts (H. 2.40 m) attached to the wall serve as a support for a bamboo screen and a sunscreen, stretched by a stainless steel cable.
Winching a tree
To get a maple on his balcony, our reader had to install a winch gallows (rented 80 €). The adult tree (well protected roots) is placed in a harness and lifted in a horizontal position so as not to damage its branches.
