This mechanism is nothing more than a large roller shutter adapted to the opening of a garage. An excellent solution for more than one reason, especially when the volume of the room is limited: a frequent problem in modern buildings...
The electric control box has an output for connecting lighting up to 40 W. It can be fixed, lasting 120 seconds, or flashing while the engine is running. This output allows to illuminate the garage momentarily or to feed a warning flash outside.
As cars continue to increase in size, that of garages follows the opposite trend. As the regulatory constraints (the COS in particular) are not extensible, that it is necessary to increase the habitable surface on grounds smaller and smaller, the garage is reduced to a skin of sorrows. It's not uncomplicated when you have to park a 4 x 4, a minivan or a MPV...
The case presented is a typical example, with a garage just slightly wider and higher than the original overhead door. Not overflowing, it limits the passage height to 1.85 m, which prohibits entry to the family vehicle. It must therefore be replaced by a suitable model.
A limited choice
The commercial garage doors are mostly based on an internal, lateral or vertical backflow mode. In the case of a small space, this poses problems of use.
Tilting models, even overflowing, reduce the available ceiling height. The same goes for sectional doors: when they are raised, they occupy a large space, which requires shifting the lights and pushes back to the bottom of the garage the possibility of installing storage. Sliding doors with side clearance have the same drawback. As for the folding versions, they claim, for their operation, a domestic reservation hardly compatible with a shallow room.
On the other hand, a compact curtain completely frees the opening in width and height. It does not create any extra space inside the garage, both along the walls and under the ceiling. Its box cutaway actually measures only 25 cm side.
The chosen model (France Fermetures) includes an apron made of "double wall" lacquered steel blades, insulated by polyurethane foam injection. These blades are 14 mm thick and 55 mm wide in front view. Plastic end caps ensure their connection, as well as quiet operation between the two side slides. Equipped with a double seal, these are lacquered aluminum, like the box.
The operation is carried out using a single-phase tubular motor, controlled by a push button inside the garage and, remotely, by a remote control. An oscillating lifting rod is also provided in case of power failure.
On the security side, the radio link is protected by a rotating code. An automatic locking system prevents any inadvertent raising attempt. A photoelectric cell, placed in the lower part of the wings, stops and then raises the apron if an obstacle occurs during the descent.
The use of steel, for the manufacture of blades, guarantees the rigidity of the assembly as well as a good resistance to shocks. The reduced dimensions of the chest adapt to those, hardly more important, the fallout of the lintel. Finally, the motorization ensures a comfort of use that did not bring the original door. The table dimensions are 2 m in height and 2.40 m in width, but the installed model can obscure openings up to H. 2.25 x l. 3.70 m (3.40 x 3.70 m with a box of 30 cm).
Different ways of laying
Like a classic roller shutter, the compact curtain can be installed outdoors, as well as indoors or under the lintel. However, in the latter case, it is necessary that the height of table allows it. The height of passage is then equal to that under caisson, minus 25 mm. Laying outdoor wall is the least aesthetic but does not depend on the fallout of the lintel, often too fair.
Before ordering, you must carefully measure the dimensions of the opening: the table, of course, but also the side spandrels and the fallout of the lintel. Recall that this last is the distance included, interior side, between the top of the embrasure and the ceiling. For this model of curtain, it must be at least 25 cm. The minimum for the spandrels is equal to the width of the wings, ie 85 mm.
Points to watch out for
The assembly of the curtain does not present great difficulties, apart from the relatively high weight of the deck: nearly 90 kg. The latter is also delivered in two parts, to pre-assemble on the motor shaft. In addition, given the large width of the elements, it is more comfortable to work in pairs.
Check the flatness of the lintel on its inside. When bent, it can hinder the dressing of the box and the connection between wall and slides. Same thing if there are projections of mortar, pegs, studs... Also check the squareness of the table, the horizontality on the underside of the lintel, the verticality of the two sides, the doorway and spandrels. It is possible to compensate for any offsets by adjusting the position of the slides. In any case, they must be perfectly aligned, at the risk of seeing the deck go down jerkily and the blades rub in the groove bottom.
Choose dowels adapted to the nature of the masonry. The back wall fixings require a lot of care to ensure the strength of the whole, including the attempts to sink the apron or pulling the presser foot.
Since the curtain is custom-made, it is necessary to measure the height and the width of the board, as well as the side spandrels and the drop of the lintel inside. It must be at least 25 cm.
The original door is a rocking model, not overflowing. To facilitate its removal, the leaf's operating arms are first dismantled in order to access the frame, sealed in the masonry.
The anchors of the old frame are ground to the wall, then the cavities are filled with quick mortar. It is carefully smoothed with the flat trowel to avoid oversize.
The compact curtain comes in four packages, backstage, trunk and apron in two parts. At the reception, make sure to carry out a complete inventory including all the accessories.
Present the slides on each side of the board to locate and drill the attachment points. Remove them to engage them flat on the nipples of the box then, after pegging (Ø 8 mm), position it all inside the garage. The height of the fallout does not allow to place the box on the head of the slides, once fixed, raise the whole before screwing.
The hood with cutaway, held by two screws on each side, must be removed to allow the assembly of the deck. This operation is however not necessary if the apron is delivered to you mounted.
To check the squareness (essential), measure the width at the top and bottom of the slides as well as the two diagonals. The difference between these dimensions can not exceed more than 2 cm at the maximum.
The box is fixed to the wall in two or three points. In practice, the sheet is pierced with a metal drill (HSS or other) before masonry. Screwing is done by inserting a washer.
The motor connection cable is approximately 1.50 m. Its length offers a certain freedom to place the control box on the left spandrel, on the side of the output of the engine.
Because of the size of the cabinet, it is more convenient to extract the card to make the electrical connections: motor, cell, switch and power from the distribution board.
The shaft is rotated until the motor stops. To facilitate its lifting, the deck is secured at its base by three ropes, then pulled by the car to pass over the tree.
Engage the first apron blade in the side slides, before pulling the assembly down by hand. Allow shims 10 to 15 cm high, in order to rest the deck.
The last blade of the deck is fixed on the tree thanks to three sliding plates. Adjust them well, before locking them on each side with the plastic rings and then tighten the bolts.
It is at this stage that the operation of the deck and the various control systems are tested. Then adjust the upper and lower limit switches with the corresponding Allen screws.
For adjustment, the apron blades must be stacked without play until the top, when the curtain is closed, and reassembled flush with the apron in open position. This done, replace the case cover.
During mounting, hold the reflector in permanent contact on the photocell using adhesive tape. At the end of the installation, put the two elements facing each other at the bottom of the slides.
It may be more useful to place the control button near the access door to the house than next to the curtain.
Finally, seal the edge with acrylic sealant and place screw caps on the slides.
