To extract stale air from a dwelling and maintain good indoor air quality, opening its windows every day is not enough. Installing a VMC (controlled mechanical ventilation) is often necessary. For this to work properly, it is necessary to capture the outside air and also to reject the stale air: it is the role of the roofing caps.
Why install roofing hats?
The renewal of air inside a housing is essential to avoid condensation, moisture, mold or bad smells. It also helps to reduce invisible indoor pollution, such as that released by certain paints or furniture glues, also known as VOCs, which can in the long run have a detrimental effect on the body.
For a VMC to work properly, its engine must suck through a set of pipes from outside air to blow it indoors. The stale air must then be rejected out by other pipes. The roof caps allow, while remaining perfectly waterproof, to hide the outlets of the pipes of the ventilation.
Where to install roofing hats?
As their name suggests, the roof caps are installed on the roof. Depending on the installed ventilation (VMC single flow or dual flow), there may be several.
Their installation is subject to very strict rules. For example, they must be far enough away from the chimney or heating ducts to avoid sucking their fumes and to be perfectly sealed and insulated to comply with the thermal regulations in force. As the indoor stale air is naturally warmer than the outside air, the outlet hatch for the stale air must also be installed higher than the hat to suck the outside air in order to respect the logic of the outside air. a natural air flow and prevent the stale air from being re-injected inside.
The different types of roofing caps
There are many roof caps available to fit all types of ventilation, from skeptic pit systems to dual-flow VMCs to home appliances. like a kitchen hood or dryer. But each model has a specific diameter that must be respected.
The shapes, materials and colors are also variable in order to be as unsightly as possible on a roof. In black or gray metal for slate roofs or brown plastic for tile roofs, rather rectangle or rounded, the models of the market exist also in kit to be put even. But for reasons of compliance and efficiency, it is best to use a professional ventilation for installation.
