Completely independent, space heaters emit heat without a boiler or distribution network. To complement an existing installation, in a house extension, for the mid-season, or for a home that does not have central heating, space heaters are an economical alternative to other equipment, heavy and expensive. Between models that run on gas, oil or electricity, it is not always easy to make a choice. To help you find the system that best suits your needs and your needs, HandymakerDuench opens its third part of the "heat emitters" folder on space heaters.
Energy deemed modern and economical, the fuel oil feeds many stoves for a comfortable and convivial auxiliary heating. Modular and mobile, they allow to heat all the rooms without exception (the living rooms as the rooms with low passage) by choosing precisely the desired temperature. With convective heat, oil-fired stoves offer excellent performance. If they operate without electricity, they still require a connection to a vent.
There are two types of oil stoves, blue flame and yellow flame, the color of which is conditioned by the burner. The yellow flames, produced by the traditional burners, offer a good heat output but produce a lot of dust and so deposits of soot. These stoves actually call for regular maintenance. More economical, the latest generation burners produce blue flames that greatly reduce fuel consumption and increase their efficiency. Very clean during combustion, these stoves require little maintenance, except for an annual sweeping.
Only downside, the persistent smell that characterizes all oil stoves. Their prices range from 300 to 1500 euros for new and new models and come down to 50 euros for used models. Be vigilant when buying, a new stove must meet the standard NF-EN-1, which guarantees you a secure equipment.
Economical and autonomous, the auxiliary gas heaters work with butane or propane, liquefied petroleum gases, non-polluting and with high calorific value. Most often mounted on wheels, they have the advantage of being fully mobile. There are four main families of gas boilers, infrared appliances, infrared appliances, catalytic appliances and construction equipment.
For infrared models, the combustion is done through a pierced ceramic briquette, which diffuses harmoniously a soft heat without drying the air.
The infra blue models produce an immediate but less diffuse heat from a stainless steel burner with calibrated holes.
Catalytic radiators, currently the most comfortable on the market, produce no flame or carbon through low-temperature combustion. They radiate homogeneous heat through a ceramic fiber panel and have a thermostat that allows them to be adjusted precisely for convenience.
Construction radiators, strictly reserved for outdoor use, are intended to heat intense and fast large areas. We differentiate medium-sized braziers, which connect directly to a cylinder and the generators of hot air, size and power much larger. They can work with an infrared or infra-blue system. The prices of gas booster radiators range from 40 to 1000 euros depending on the models and their power.
More and more aesthetic and efficient, electric radiators offer many opportunities for heat diffusion. They can be blowing, oil bath, convection or radiant panels:
The fan heaters can be ceramic or plastic, and it is advantageous to be easily transportable. They provide immediate warmth and offer many options such as frost, silence or child safety. Big consumers of energy, they are often used in bathrooms, where you have to be vigilant with water.
Using the same principle as conventional convectors, the auxiliary convectors provide localized heat through a resistance system. Ideal for small areas, this auxiliary heater is not recommended for large rooms.
Mobile radiant heaters, just like the fixed ones, emit a diffuse heat without drying the room through a steel grid. They provide a pleasant feeling of warmth. Relatively reasonable, the price range of electric space heaters ranges from 10 to 150 euros in major DIY stores.
Although space heaters seem to be an easy and quick solution, they are not environmentally friendly and sometimes consume a lot of energy. HandymanDuDimanche advises you to prefer other heating systems, often more expensive to buy but less greedy. The best is to do without the mid-season, favoring the wearing of a sweater at the start of a radiator. Do not forget, the best energy is the one you do not consume!
