Quickly install non-woven wallpaper

Necessary material

  • Wallpaper stripper
  • Painter's spatula
  • Wallpaper paste
  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Brush to glue
  • Plumb bob (or ruler), spirit level
  • Pencil
  • Mesureing tape
  • Spatula to be rubbed
  • Sticker roulette
  • Cutter scissors
  • Kitchen knife without tooth or upholsterer's saber
  • Stool
  • Eable to glue and sword of upholsterer (possibly)

If your walls are already upholstered, the first thing to do is carefully peel off the old paper. To work quickly and well, nothing beats a steam stripper (to rent in GSB, Kiloutou...). Models with independent boiler have a steam production autonomy of about one hour. Reserved for small and medium-sized surfaces, electric all-in-one strippers (with built-in tank) require more frequent stops for "refueling". In return, they offer the advantage of a minimum footprint.
In any case, do not forget to protect the floor with a plastic tarpaulin and turn off the power.

A simplified pose

Unlike traditional wallpaper that must be glued to the back, the glue is applied directly to the wall for non-woven paper. This is an essential difference, synonymous with saving time and ease of use. The wall should be normally porous so that the glue retains its qualities. If the support is too absorbent (type plaster), the water contained in the glue is "pumped", it loses some of its adhesion power. On such substrates, first apply a bottom preparation, consisting of half glue and a primer (type ESP Durieu) to mix in the same volume of water.

How many rolls?

To calculate the number of rolls needed, add the length and width of the piece and multiply that number by two to get the perimeter. Do not deduct doors and windows from measures to leave a margin of safety (compensate for falls and connections).
The standard ceiling height is 2.50 m, there are four strips per roll, usually 10 m long. Each one is 50 cm wide (actually 53 cm), so you can cover a wall width of 2 m per roll.
Always have one more roll and check that all rolls have the same serial and bath number.

How to start?

If after checking, the door frame is straight, start against the frame.
If not, start half the width of the (right) edge over the door and sharpen the other part against the door frame. Neither seen nor known, verticality is caught!

take off wallpaper

Peel off the old paper: slowly move the tray off the stripper (allow time for the steam to soften the glue).
Then grab a corner of the yel and pull gently towards you to take off the paper tape.

to pose the first lé of wallpaper

Draw a vertical line from the ceiling to the plinth so that the first one is level.
Use the plumb line or upholsterer ruler and check the verticality with the spirit level.

cut the wallpaper strips

Cut the strips to the height of the wall + 5 cm: make a mark at the desired height, bend and cut with the sword of upholsterer (failing that, a simple kitchen knife without teeth does the trick).

paste the wallpaper

Ask the first lé.
Apply the glue to the wall with the glue brush.
Do this afterwards, by overflowing the glue on the surface of the next one.

ask non-woven wallpaper

Present the lé on the wall well aligned with the pencil line.
Hold the leg with one hand in the upper corner, and hold it on the opposite side with the other.
Marouflage: drive air bubbles from the center to the edges.

cut the overhangs of the wallpaper lé

Place the spatula to be marbled in the hollow of the corner of the ceiling and the wall.
Fold the paper and cut it by gently sliding spatula and cutter together with a steady gesture.

put a side of a wallpaper

Lay the edges of a plain paper edge on board (the tiles are placed from left to right or from right to left).
Marouflage and pass the caster over the fitting.
Wipe off any glue reflux with a damp sponge.

paste a wallpaper frieze

You can combine a non-woven with a traditional wallpaper.
Here, the roof window is underlined by a frieze stuck under the creeper. The glue is the same, the only difference is that it is on the back of the paper.

Dress a switch with non-woven wallpaper

wallpaper and switch

Do not disassemble the recessed switches if they do not have a removable trim.
Cut the power, put the non-woven fabric on the case and make a cross opening with scissors.

cut the wallpaper around a switch

Cut the ends of the paper ends crosswise (the paper still covering the edge of the case).
Unscrew the two locking screws of the claws a little.

put the wallpaper under the switch cover

Lift the case slightly, push the paper back with a spatula to rub.
Replace the housing, tighten the locking screws and restore power.
