As a man of the land, Bernard Laporte loves natural materials and was built a timber frame house. To protect it from cellulose eaters, he selected an original process using a polyethylene film that avoids resorting to repetitive chemical treatments. Test transformed!
In 2001, 61 departments (against 10 in 1953) fall prey to termite gluttony. Southwest, Gironde and Landes, in particular, are the most exposed with more than 70% of infested municipalities. Except for some exotic species, no wood can resist. Cellulos in all its forms, these pests also devour cartons, papers, fabrics, insulating sheaths, polystyrene and even certain trees of the garden... Unlike parasites (capricorns, vrillettes...) which are xylophagous only in the state of larvae termites are all their existence! Difficult under these conditions to have a wooden house built, without being surrounded by a maximum of precaution.
A plastic that is damming
Designed to prevent the development of termite mounds, the process implemented (Cecil's Termifilm) involves wrapping the buried structures of the house in a film that forms an impenetrable barrier.
Made of highly resistant polyethylene, its particularity is to integrate in its thickness a deadly insecticide (permethrin), with a double preventive and curative action. Repellent, the product keeps the colonies away from termites. Lethal, he leaves them in a few hours after contact.
Green in color, the film is anti-UV treated to prevent the pesticide from deteriorating in contact with light. In addition to its termicidal function, it stops the rise of humidity caused by the water table or rainwater, which makes it unnecessary to apply waterproof products on the buried walls. In the case of complex construction sites, two complementary products can be associated with it to treat areas that are difficult to access: polyethylene granules (Termigranuls) and a bituminous black anti-humidity paint (Termifuge).
The pellets mix with the earth fill and spread around cable ducts, underground pipes, etc. The bituminous paint is applied on the semi-buried or buried parts (piles, cellar, sub-face of stairs...). Their use ensures a perfect continuity of the insecticide and closes all access to parasites.
A methodical pose
The application of the film takes place here on one level on an embankment of land ready to receive the concrete slab of the ground floor. The rolls (3 x 80 m) are unrolled and unfolded in half to obtain their actual width. At the ends of the slab, they are cut with the cutter by providing a peripheral margin of 20 cm.
The strips are connected to the adhesive tape to prevent any leakage zone. Surfaces must be clean and free of dust. Wire mesh is finally placed on the film for the subsequent casting of a floating screed. To play its role, the film must not show any tear. During the work, it must be handled with care and travel with clean rubber boots or sports shoes. Similarly, the soil is previously leveled and cleaned of all rubble, stones, metal debris... likely to damage it. When backfilling excavations, the soil is roughly filtered. In case of accidental shock associated with perforations, it may be necessary to replace all or part of the lé.
Features and prices
Developed in 1995, this process has been tested in laboratories of the CTBA (Technical Center for Wood and Furniture). He has obtained the CTB P + certification attesting to his antitermite efficacy for 5 years. According to the manufacturer, accelerated aging tests carried out in his laboratories showed that the termicide (associated with the film) remained active for 20 years or more. Note: Its application concerns the new construction sector. It is difficult to use on existing constructions and inefficient when they are contaminated.
Count 7,30 € / m2 posed by a duly mandated applicator (member of the network Cecil and possibly approved CTB-A +). This implementation authorization commits the company to reopen for 10 years in case of termite detection. On the basis of 300 m2 treated, the project budget is about 2200 €. A higher cost than a conventional preventive treatment (760 to 1060 €) but justified by the durable and final nature of the process. Once installed, it requires no supervision or subsequent treatment generating odors, noises, damage to the walls...
To avoid any risk of washing the film in the soil in contact with water, its manufacture closely associates polymer resins and termicide. Unlike traditional treatments, the repeated use of which leads to a pesticide build-up in the soil, this process is safe for the environment. In 1995, he won the regional and national "environment" awards from the APAVE (Lyon association of owners of steam and electric appliances).
Digging the foundations
Excavations are dug to sink a sole on iron frames (longrins). After 28 days of drying, the foundations are made of concrete blocks and surrounded by concrete.
Prepare the surface of the slab
This done, the central area is backfilled, groomed and covered with a bed of fine sand and clean. Previously, the wastewater and air ducts are put in place with their connections.
Unroll the plastic film
The rolls are unwound from one end of the floor to the other and unfolded to obtain their actual width. Sport shoes are recommended not to damage the plastic!
Position the strips
The strips are placed side by side with an overlap of about 10 cm.
Cut to adjust
On the edge of the slab, to be folded later under it, the cuts are cut with a cutter with a margin of about twenty centimeters.
Connect the strips
When all the strips are in place, their connections are made with a large adhesive tape. Surfaces must be clean and free of sand dust or dirt.
Lay the wire mesh
Square mesh wire mesh is laid on the film in anticipation of the pouring of the slab. The operation requires a lot of care because the film must not be damaged in any way.
Drill conduit locations
At the level of the ducts, the film is open crosswise to the cutter to the dimensions of their respective diameters. The PVC fittings are nested on the various ventilation, supply and drainage ducts.
We come back in force the reservations obtained on the perimeter of the conduit for it to cross the film. The game must be weak to fit the shape of the conduit. Rectangles cut from film slips are then wrapped around each fitting. The whole is surrounded by tape to the base, to isolate it from the floor.
Fold the margin
Thus arranged, the ground is ready to receive a slab of concrete. On the periphery, the margin of film that overflows is folded back on itself to create a slight extra thickness and resist the invader!
Christian Pessey's advice to protect his house from termites
Termites are present and very active in about forty departments. Termite protection is mandatory, especially in the new one.
Several solutions exist: chemical barrier in the form of spreading at the site of construction before work; Physicochemical barrier, in the form of an insecticidal film.
In both cases, care must be taken not to attract termites (for example, do not store firewood outdoors near the house).
