There are companies specialized in the cleaning of facades degraded by graffiti. However, their interventions are expensive. If graffiti is accessible, it is better to clean it yourself, although it requires time and elbow grease. Here are some ways to get the job done.
Clean graffiti on a small area
If the graffiti are on a small surface, it is possible for an individual to clean them with cleaning products such as soda ash, the baking soda or bleach.
To clean a graffiti with soda crystals:
- Begin by diluting the soda crystals in hot water;
- Dip a brush into the water, then rub the graffiti.
The operation may take a long time, but it is effective to remove the paint on a wall. It is necessary to repeat several times on the same area to completely eliminate the incrusted traces. When handling soda crystals, it is imperative to protect yourself by wearing gloves, adapted clothes and projection glasses. Indeed, by brushing the wall, projections can reach the eyes if they are not protected...
To clean a graffiti with baking soda:
- Pour water into a bucket;
- Add bleach and baking soda;
- Dip a brush into the solution and scrub vigorously the wall;
- Leave on for a few minutes before repeating the same actions.
To clean a graffiti with white spirit:
- Soak a cloth of white spirit;
- Dab the graffiti with the linen;
- Repeat as many times as necessary.
The white spirit is to handle with a great precaution. Wearing gloves and goggles is strongly recommended. In addition, the use of white spirit is only possible on a small surface. To clean an entire facade, look for another solution.
Thealcohol to burn also helps to clean some types of paint. You have to test a small part of the wall to see if it works. Just dab the graffiti with a cloth soaked in alcohol to burn. The paint is then wiped with a sponge. You must know that the painting will not go away at once. The operation must be repeated several times to obtain the expected result.
The aérogommage is effective in removing paint, oxidation and grease. In addition, this technique can be applied to all types of surfaces, including the most fragile. Indeed, the airgel is done at low pressure, thus avoiding altering the supports: wood, plastic, brick, copper, aluminum, cement, stone, concrete, glass or steel. Moreover, not using toxic products, this technique has no impact on the environment and health.
To perform an airgel, however, it is necessary to bring: a air jig, an air compressor and an abrasive product. Thus, this technique represents a certain investment, but the device can be used for other purposes: maintenance of the facade, cleaning of a terrace... To avoid investing in expensive equipment, it is also possible to rent from a specialized company.
Use cleaning wipes to remove graffiti
The quickest and easiest way to remove graffiti is the use of cleaning wipes. They are specially designed to remove graffiti, but also traces of marker, felt, resin and adhesives. However, they are only used on smooth, non-porous surfaces. Thanks to solvents they contain, graffiti can be easily removed in no time. These wipes can be used on glass surfaces, painted surfaces... To eliminate graffiti with wipes, simply:
- Dust the support to be treated;
- Rub the graffiti with the wipe.
The operation can be repeated as many times as necessary.
Graffiti should be removed as quickly as possible so that it does not become deeply embedded in the support. Indeed, it will be more difficult to eliminate it completely. If the graffiti was made some time ago, it is better to use chemicals to get a better result. It should be noted, however, that chemicals have an impact on the environment and should be used very carefully. The person applying the products must be protected by wearing gloves, glasses and appropriate clothing. The choice will be between paint stripper, methanol, paint thinner... Whatever the solution adopted, it is always necessary to perform a test on a small surface.
To remove graffiti on brick, cement and concrete, use neutral pH paint stripper. To do this:
- Apply the stripper on the surface to be cleaned;
- Brush vigorously with a stiff brush;
- Rinse thoroughly.
To remove a graffiti on unpainted metal, it is necessary to uselighter fuel. To do this:
- Apply the gasoline to the surface to be cleaned;
- Brush energetically;
- Rinse thoroughly.
The gasoline lighter is to handle with great care. It is used as far from all sources of heat.
To remove graffiti on a metal or aluminum surface, it is possible to use methanol.
- Project the product a few centimeters from the surface;
- Rinse thoroughly.
In the case where graffiti is particularly difficult to remove, it is always possible to cover them with a new paint. Several layers may be needed to completely hide the tracks. Subsequently, the new painting should be protected from future graffiti.
After removing the graffiti, it is possible to protect the wall to avoid any recurrence. The wall can thus be covered with a plastic film which will prevent the painting from soaking up. Thus, the future tags can be eliminated with a simple blow of sponge.
In addition to the plastic film, protective varnish can also be applied to protect the wall from possible vandalism. This product does not change the initial appearance of the building. Indeed, it comes in matte finish, satin or gloss to adapt to the existing paint.
