How to wax and maintain a piece of furniture

The wax is the natural complement of the wood decoration of the furniture. It nourishes, maintains, protects and embellishes the wood by bringing out the nuances of its veining. Beeswax, a totally natural product, is at the basis of most products on the market, waxes or polishes, liquid or paste, but in greater or lesser proportions. To wax a piece of furniture is a simple operation that does not pose any difficulty of application. However it may become necessary to carry out a thorough cleaning of the furniture that the accumulation of wax may have pasted. The use of a "stripper", sometimes called "furniture stripper", allows to restore the wood bare but without removing its patina.

1. Soak a fine steel wool pad (# 1) with a scouring disc and then vigorously move it in circular motions over the surfaces of the piece of furniture. The product dissolves the wax but without attacking the wood, nor altering its patina. Equalize in the direction of the wood fiber.

2. Remove the melted wax with rags. Put your fingers over the furniture to feel if there is still wax. If it does, try the operation again. Use a hard brush (non-metallic) to work any moldings and sculptures. Let it dry then sand lightly and dust off.

3. To wax the furniture panels, load a new stamp of the "Antiquaires' balm" in paste and spread the product on the surface of the panel. This product, presented in liquid, paste and spray, is derived from noble bee waxes. Wax of old tradition, synonymous of high quality, the "balm of the Antiquaries" ensures the woods which it nourishes in depth, an effective protection and an embellishment which results in an incomparable patina. 4. Make circular passes on the piece of furniture in order to penetrate the wax. Do not overload. It is better to make a waxed finish in two layers of fine wax, easy to shine effortlessly in a single thicker layer that will require more effort to raise it (make it shine). Equalize in the direction of the wood fibers.

1. The same product will be preferred in its liquid (and colorless) presentation for furniture with reduced flat surfaces such as this pierced chair. Use a cotton wick and apply the wax in circular motions.

2. It remains to be shine with a wick of cotton or according to the process of the grandmothers, with socks (used preferably) in wool.
