Outdoor wooden structures such as huts, shelters or canopies must be maintained regularly. A stain is then a good solution to protect them against UV and bad weather.

The garden sheds, like all the external wood joinery (window, door, shutter, fence, cladding), suffer as much from rain as from UV rays.
Over time, they will decay, but they can also quickly deteriorate when they lose their protection.
Apart from exotic species and some local species (chestnut, etc.), the water ends up attacking the wood that is degraded over time. On species such as pine or fir (even treated autoclave), a more or less regular maintenance is necessary to avoid subsequent repairs more important and therefore more expensive.
Paint, varnish or stain?
Even if the manufacturers of outdoor wood maintenance products indicate durations of protection, the first signs of deterioration are the whitening of the wood surface.
Unlike the paint that only covers the support, the varnish is distinguished by its transparent appearance. It makes it possible to realize hard and smooth protective coverings (filmogenes), of aspect matt or glossy.
The lasures are as for them products of impregnation, protection (water-repellent, insecticide and fungicide) but also decoration (natural tint or coloring).
On a new, bare wood or when it is very degraded, it is even recommended to use a saturator which impregnates a deep rejection protection up to the heart of the wood fibers (Blanchon, Bondex, Owatrol, Syntilor...).
Treat the preparation before staining
In the case presented here, an underlayer has been applied beforehand. It offers extra protection and unifies the surface by covering the different shades of hue, due to the previous coat and the knots present in the wood.
For an irreparable finish, it is essential to prepare well the support removing the surface film created by the previous stain. Careful grinding should be undertaken with abrasives of different grains.
Start with 80-100 (coarse) grain to finish at 180-200 (medium) grain. Working in dry and windy weather followed by good dusting prevents the formation of a grainy deposit or dirt during the application of the undercoat, the stain and during drying phases.
When products allow it, applying high-pressure or low-pressure paint stain is faster, and much easier than brushing and rolling. This operation however requires a precise and regular gesture to obtain an application without trace.
Preparation of the support
Using a vibrating sander equipped with an abrasive (80 grit), sand the flat surfaces in the direction of the wood grain.
Do not hesitate to replace the abrasive regularly if it is dirty.
For grooves, preferably use a delta sander or a multifunction tool with a triangular head.
Proceed in the same way on small surfaces and in difficult places of access (junctions, anglesvЂ|) to favor a good grip later.
Using a compressor equipped with a blow gun, thoroughly dust all the sanded surfaces.
In default, use a painter's brush.
Application of the underlay
Energize the underlayment pot and open the lid with a flat screwdriver.
Use a clean mixer to finish homogenizing the contents of the pot.
With a brush to turn, start by applying the underlay in the grooves and every nook and cranny.
Then continue the roller application always in the direction of the blades.
If the underlayment is sprayable, use a mixer mounted on a drill to thoroughly mix it.
At the viscometer, check fluidity of the product and adjust dilution if necessary (addition of thinner in 5% increments).
After having masked the glazing of the doors, to fill the tank of the paint gun to the 3/4 then to pulverize the product in every nook and cranny.
Make sure to cover all surfaces.
Application of the stain
The choice of the hue made (see the tip below), mix the stain well until you obtain a homogeneous consistency and a uniform hue.
Prepare a blade covered with underlayment.
After drying, make a first pass of each of the chosen stains.
Apply a tackifier to separate the samples, taking care to note the number of passes above the tests, until obtaining the desired hue.
Use alternately a brush and a special wood roller to proceed to the first application.
The stain is a fairly fluid product, do not overload the tools.
In case of sagging, wipe with a clean cloth, then iron the brush or roller.
For a dry run, sand lightly.
Apply an underlay pass locally before repeating the first coat of stain.
To finish without a trace and have a nice finish, use a paint spray gun taking care to adjust the dilution and test on a falling cardboard.
