High-performance glazing, automatisms integrated into the chassis, greater luminosity... The new models of roof windows advantageously replace their seniors, even if this change has a cost.

Like the joinery of the facades, the roof windows are subject to the ravages of time (infi ltrations to the corners of the frames, condensation of glazing...). At the same time, technological developments, especially in the face of cold, noise and solar radiation, are making old models obsolete.
Insulating elements, integrated into the openings and to add to the dormant, have thus improved the performance of joinery, lowering their coefficient of heat loss (Uw). Other notable improvements: the increase of the glazed area (daylight), the possibility of traditional or recessed installation, the juxtaposition of several frames thanks to the same fixing brackets...
But also the automatic opening that integrates a transformer and disconnect automatically in case of manual opening. Not to mention the presence of shutters and sealing connections (outer cladding) with curved lines, etc. All these arguments encourage us to replace windows older than 25 years old.
An easier implementation
But this choice represents a significant investment (especially when opting for a motorized model). In general, the pivots are located on either side of the opening. Its opening by rotation is obtained by maneuvering the bar provided in the upper part.
Problem: if it is less than 2 m from the ground, you risk bumping your head once the door locked in a horizontal position.
And if this type of window is implanted above, a motorization becomes essential because the bar is maneuvered with a cane. Delivered here with the window, the operator is controlled by a remote control with touch screen capable of ordering up to 200 automations of different brands (8 pre-programmed scenarios).
When the dimensions of the new model remain identical to those of the old, the procedure to follow is simpler than a pose ex nihilo: no administrative procedure to be envisaged, it is useless to create a trimmer and to dress the periphery of the opening interior side. It suffices to correct some elements of cover in case of insulating cladding. It remains to provide protections for working at height as here on a roof (harness, lifeline, roof ladder...).
1 REMOVAL OF OLD WOODWORK
To operate from the outside, securely attach the roofer ladders to the frame, taking care not to rest them on the gutters.
Rotate the frame vertically to access the pivot lock stops. Tuck the stops with the blade of a screwdriver to release the opening.
Remove the tiles around the frame. Then remove the sealing connections,
Unscrew the fasteners of the frame and remove it.
2 ASSEMBLY OF THE NEW DORMANT
Separate the opening of the frame but, unlike a conventional installation, do not screw its fastening brackets in advance: they would interfere with the installation of the frame on the doubling (plastered) of the opening.
The doubling allows to position the frame. But only older models of brackets are used without regard to benchmarks.
Check the squareness by measuring its diagonals. If they are uneven, leverage between the frame and its trimmer (pliers).
Check the horizontality of the frame at the top and bottom.
If necessary, place one or more synthetic shims under the feet.
The motor power cable (2 x 1.5 mm2) travels to the lower right corner of the frame. Too short for a wall outlet, it is extended from a junction box after the 2P end-of-cable plug is removed.
3 SETTING UP CLOTHES
Present the 4 sides of the insulation. Check that they fit the chassis correctly. Remove the protection covering their backing adhesive and plate the elements on the frame.
An interval must be reserved between the lower cross member of the frame and the first row of tiles below.
With tiles with high relief, the cut is made at 45° only on their convex parts.
Introduce the water return and screw it into the bottom rail of the frame. The embossed flap is shaped directly on the tiles of the first lower row.
Nail the connecting corridors in the battens. If necessary, cut out their foam gasket so that it is not bent under the tiles. Ditto for that of the hood (dressing sup.).
Because of the new coating, the tiles are ground with the grinder, to arrive between 30 and 60 mm of the lateral connections.
4 INSTALLATION OF THE MOTORIZED OPENING
Pass the opening diagonally through the frame after having protected its bottom rail (with a cloth) to avoid damaging the edges.
Tilt the opening vertically above the joints of the frame.
Then lower it down to engage its pivots in the slots, then pull out their lock stops.
Connect the power supply, turn on the remote control. Follow the procedure for the system to register the installed actuator.
Hold the window in the open position and unfold the motor chain (connected to the power supply). Then attach it to the attachment provided for this purpose: behind the opening bar of the opening.
Test the rain sensor by placing a little water on it. Self-heating, this device remains dry permanently. It is insensitive to fog, drizzle and dew.
