Thermal insulation of walls from the outside (ITE) is generally recommended for renovation work. It is thus possible to improve the thermal and acoustic performances of a habitat at the same time as the renovation of its facades.
Why choose wall insulation from the outside?
Unlike interior wall insulation (ITI), which is preferred for new construction, exterior insulation is ideal for homes under renovation. It reconciles effective insulation with facade beautification.
In addition to offering a better comfort of life thanks to a thermal insulation and phonic of quality, the ITE offers a revalorization to the good, all the more it makes it possible to answer the requirements of thermal performances related to the Thermal Regulation 2012 (RT 2012).
What are the techniques for insulating walls from the outside?
Wall insulation from the outside consists of add an insulating layer all around the building. There are two techniques of external thermal insulation: the ITE under cladding and the ITE under plaster.
ITE under cladding
This technique consists of inserting an insulating material between the wooden frames, which are themselves fixed to the walls of the building. The set is then covered with a siding choice. This is the technique that limits most thermal bridges and therefore offers the best results in insulation.
ITE under coating: mechanical or glued fastening
The insulation, in the form of panels, is fixed to the wall by gluing or mechanically using dowels or profiles. It then serves as a support for a fiberglass reinforcement, coated with a decorative finishing plaster.
- Glued fastener
This is the simplest and fastest solution to put in place. The insulation is directly glued to the wall. For this technique, only white expanded polystyrene (EPS) type insulation, gray graphite expanded polystyrene or wood fiber can be used.
- Mechanical fixing
Although a little more complicated to put in place, this technique has the advantage of being compatible with all types of insulation and all the supports. The insulating panels are both fixed by gluing and mechanically using through fasteners.
In any case, if the insulation is good enough, insulation of the walls from the outside can be part of the RT 2012.
Benefits of exterior wall insulation
- high performance thermal and acoustic insulation
- thermal bridges removed
- renovated facades
- preserved living space
- upgraded habitat
- many choices of finishes, architectural freedom
- insulation solution according to the requirements of the RT 2012
- possibility to stay in the house during the work
Price of an insulation by the outside
Depending on the insulation used, the condition of the facade or the facing chosen, the price of insulation from the outside can be extremely variable.
It takes an average of 100 € the m² and 200 € the m² for an ITE under coating and between 150 and 400 € the m² for an ITE under siding.
