Calculate the amount of parquet needed

As a result of many water leaks, the wooden floor of this old house would have required a total renovation. The owners have however preferred to cover it with a new coating, laminate flooring. First step: raise the area of the room to determine the quantity to order. To do this, simply multiply the length by the width and add about 5% to the total in anticipation of possible cutting errors. The choice of the product must also take into account the room in which it will be placed.

Different solutions available on the market

In addition to laminate, other types of coverings may be chosen for renovation. Thin and quick to install, vinyl coatings require a perfectly flat and uniform floor. Otherwise, they reveal the irregularities of the support. To avoid this inconvenience, it is essential to apply a primer and then cast a self-leveling fiber patch ensuring the flatness of the soil.
It is also possible to replace a degraded parquet floor with another solid wood floor. The technique consists in depositing all the blades to replace them with new blades of the same thickness to be nailed on the joists. In this case, it is advisable to take advantage of this to proceed to the soundproofing - often necessary in old buildings - of the type mineral wool in strips or to blow, to arrange between the joists. Parquet manufacturers offer different finishes but also raw blades to tint, vitrify or wax yourself.

Easy to install: laminate

For its part, the laminate flooring offers the appearance of wood and allows easy installation on a raw cement screed, an old floor or a tiled floor. Acoustic insulation is glued on the underside of some models. Otherwise, it must be installed before the coating is used. Easy to install, the blades are assembled by a snap-in system requiring no nails or glue. In addition, their low thickness avoids the planing of the doors in some cases. For this project, the choice was a laminate floor (Quick-Step Go), chosen for its thin thickness (7 mm) and ease of installation (floating) thanks to a fastening system with clips (Uniclic).

To remove all irregularities and get a good flatness of the floor, even with a sander. Depending on the level to be caught, use coarse abrasive belts (# 80) and then fine (# 120).

Take measurements for cutting blades

For the end blades, measure the space to be covered taking into account the expansion wedge (about 5 mm).

Report the measures

Carry the measurement on the underside and draw the cut line.

Cut the blade

Cut the blade

Hold the blade firmly on a block and cut it out. Different tools are possible: handsaw with carbide pellets, jigsaw.

More practical, a cutting press (guillotine cutter floor or wood shears) with a blade fixed on a plate, ensures a clean cut and is also suitable for melamine.

Slowly remove the insulation coating

Unfold the acoustic sub-layer (recommended to improve the insulation) by separating the soil from the walls. To avoid any risk of degradation, install it as the blades are laid.

Profiling the insulation with the cutter

Cut the insulation with the cutter. On concrete on the ground floor, raising the edges of the insulation avoids any risk of rising moisture.

Apply the boards over the coating

Position the blades perpendicular to those of the original floor. Beforehand, cut the tabs of the blades placed against the wall.

Install shims to leave room for expansion

Install shims to leave room for expansion

Between the wall and the first boards, interpose wedges peripheral to maintain the parquet in abutment during the pose. This expansion space must be at least 5 mm.

Insert the second row of blades

Insert the second row of blades

For the next row, slide the angled blade sideways and make sure it sticks to the floor. Remember to connect the underlay strips with adhesive tape.

Lay the following rows

Using a martyr hold and a hammer or mallet, insert the blade into the previous one. No day should appear between the blades. Continue on all the rows.

Stagger the blades for an English-style pose

For the English "stone cut" installation, the boards are laid in full length and the joints staggered regularly from one half-blade from one row to the other.

Use a blade driver for the last row

Prepare the expansion blocks, present the plinth and apply it by pressing firmly on the entire surface to distribute the glue.

Immediately dry the water on the floor

Laminate flooring is easy to maintain (slightly wet mop, vacuum cleaner). But he fears water: immediately clear any spilled liquid accidentally.

A coating adapted to the room

Initiated by the Scientific and Technical Center for Building (Cstb), the UPEC classification of premises and floor coverings takes into account durability according to use: wear (U); punching (P); water and moisture behavior (E); resistance to chemical agents (C). For each factor, it defines a minimum level of performance (from 1 to 5). For example, a room without direct outside access is classified U3 P2 E2 C2. The chosen floor covering must therefore correspond at least to these performance levels.
In the absence of a UPEC classification, a class of use, indicated on the packaging, guarantees the destination of the product and its resistance to shocks, stains, cigarette burns, etc. Three classes correspond to levels of domestic use: 21 (moderate use, bedroom for example), 22 (normal use, living room...) and 23 (high use, kitchen...).
