Opening and closing the gate remotely, thanks to a motorization, is no longer considered a luxury. It is a daily comfort that is difficult to live without when you have tasted it. Especially since the new automations are more reliable and install without special skills or complicated settings.

Available in DIY superstores and material shops, Motostar's "Eclistar" engine can be installed on gates with leaves up to 2.20 m wide and up to 300 kg. It comes with two geared motors, a control unit, two remote controls, a flashing lamp with integrated antenna and wall plates for fixing the motors. Guaranteed 3 years, the system is worth 749 €. As an option, it can receive accessories to improve the user-friendliness or safety: photocells, emergency stop button, battery backup to open the gate in case of power failure, keyboard code, key switch, push button to open a single door (pedestrian crossing) or both, etc.

Steps to motorize a portal

The motorization of a leaf gate is limited to two motors, or geared motors, and a control unit. The latter is connected to the mains, the geared motors and various accessories delivered or optional (flashing lamp, code or key control, lighting...).
It transforms the current into low voltage (24 V), receives and transmits orders sent by the remote control. The motors, bolted and pegged on the pillars, actuate pistons or articulated arms fixed on the leaves.
A central stop stops the two flaps when closing, while two lateral limit their race to the opening. On modern engines, the geared motors are self-locking to keep the leaves closed and secure them. Manual unlocking is provided in case of power failure. The motorization must include a security system.
It stops the movement of the leaves and makes them go back in the opposite direction to the least resistance (objects, people, children, animals...).

The choice of a motorization is made according to the dimensions and the weight of each leaf. If their characteristics are out of the ordinary, the intervention of a professional will be almost mandatory. Nevertheless, the engines intended for the general public cover the majority of the needs. It remains to choose between a cylinder engine and an articulated arm motor.

The first, rather discreet, compact and aesthetic, is needed when the movement at the pillar is limited: when a wall is placed perpendicular to the post and hinders the movement of the engine, for example. The articulated arm model, on the other hand, reproduces human movement thanks to an "engine" arm and a connecting rod. More bulky, it requires sufficient clearance at the pillar so that the arm can fold without difficulty. This type of motorization allows an opening of the leaves up to 110°, while a cylinder can not spread them beyond 90°. It is an articulated arm operator that has been installed in our report ("Eclistar" by Motostar).


The 230-240 V electrical circuit that powers the control unit is protected by a 30 mA differential circuit breaker. Three conductors (phase, neutral and earth) of 1.5 mm2, separated or in the form of a cable of type U 1000 R02V (or FRN 05 VV-U), are threaded in red TPC type sleeves, ICTL or ICTA to protect them from shocks. Surrounded by 30 cm of sand or loose earth, they bury themselves to 50 cm of depth, even 85 cm under the driveways. A red plastic screen is placed 20 cm above the cable, as an alarm.

The low voltage cables leaving the control unit and supplying the geared motors are also placed under sheath and buried as before.

The installation of a portal motor: all the steps

The motorization is delivered with a precise mode of installation, which does not prevent a first attentive reading before starting the works. The implementation begins with the attachment of the gearmotors to the pillars, the flanges of the articulated arms on the leaves and the control unit.

After the various electrical connections of the control unit and the geared motors, it is necessary to proceed to the end of travel settings of the leaves. They allow to slow down at the end of closing and manage their stop on the stops without excessive thrust at the end of opening. These manipulations are performed on each geared motor. A little patience is needed.
On the control unit, it is possible to adjust the "sensitivity" of the motor force when an obstacle is detected. Similarly, you can adjust the pause time after opening, and the delay between closing the first and second leaves...

The arms of the engine are self-locking. It is therefore necessary to dismount the gate lock and the lockstand. Check that the center and side stops are well anchored in the ground.

The geared motors are positioned at the height of a leaf crossbar. Ankle and bolt their platinum support on the pillars with the lag bolts provided. Check their horizontality.

Fix the flanges of the articulated arms

Identify the location of the flanges of the articulated arms on the gate. Their distance from the hinges is shown in the instructions for use. Drill and secure with appropriate bolts and nuts.

The control unit can be deported and placed at the height of man or, as here, under one of the geared motors. After locating, drill four holes, peg and fix.

Remove the cover of the gearmotors. Attach the gearmotors to their support plate with the screws and nuts provided. Each motor carries a label for mounting on the left or right pillar.

Insert the motor arm in the axis of the gearmotor. Lock the motor arm by tightening the screw and washer provided.

Lubricate the arm joint, assemble and screw the connecting rod. Unlock the engine.

Fix the connecting rod

Fasten the connecting rod to the flange of the leaf with the screw and nut provided, checking that the rotation is correct. Perform the same operations to install the engine arm and its connecting rod on the other engine.

The power supply of the control unit is carried out with 3 wires (phase, neutral and earth) of 1.5 mm2 of section passed in a sheath of the type TPC red, ICTL or ICTA blue.

Pass the three electrical wires connecting the gearmotor to the control unit and make the connections. On the front, appear the key and the flap to unlock the engine.

With the engine unlocked, close the leaf for adjustment. Turn the white wheel to reach the red adjustment wedge you are removing. The opening limit switch is set.



To adjust the closing slowdown limit switch, move the 14 mm red wheel to the left or use the adjustment wedge to find exactly this gap. Take off the hold.

A sheath was embedded in the pillar to pass the connection wires between the control unit and the flashing lamp. After marking the holes, peg and screw the lamp holder.

Place a bead of silicone sealant on the edges of the cabinet, before installing the cover which seals against bad weather and dust, prejudicial to the electronics.

Close the formwork

Install the hinges on the cabinet, mount the cover and close. Screw the protective covers on the geared motors. The installation is complete. Restore the power and try the motorization.
