October sign in color the end of the sweet season in the garden. The last beautiful days alternate with the first cold bites.
Works of the month of October
- Remove dead leaves from hardy perennials (sage, sediums, delphidiums...). Leave in place those of chilly grasses.
- Harvest the fragrant fruits of the thorny lemon trees (Poncirus) and quince trees from Japan to form ornamental jars.
- Collect the dead leaves and put them in compost with nitrogen elements (grass clippings). Burn those roses and fruit trees to limit diseases.
- Pick the "kiwis" as they mature. They keep well in a cool place.
- Lay strips of glue or grease on the trunks of the hazel trees. They will defeat the females of the balanins, parasite of the fruit.
- Cut currants from leaf drop. Stagger the operation until the end of the winter.
- Remove shrubs from organic mulches that can stay on the ground to avoid rooting above the ground.
- On grass, plant the bulbs naturalized with existing obstacles (benches, statues...). The mower's work will be easier in the spring.
To be envisaged in October in the garden:
Quickly protect chilly plants, including summer-flowering bulbs, and consider harvesting the latest crops.
Predict the blossoming of spring and plant accordingly... The sooner the better.
Plant the bulbs
Tulips and crocuses are to be banished from gardens invaded by rodents. The latter are greedy for their bulbs filled with sugar.
On the other hand, the fritillaries (daffodils, hyacinths and garlic) as well as all their parents (snowdrops, scills...), do not fear anything, they are toxic or strongly repulsive.
Protect summer bulbs
At this time of the year, the dilemma is this: let them bloom to the end, while just avoiding the harmful effects of frost. Dahlias, especially (our picture), often show the best of themselves during the late season.
We must stay on the lookout for weather reports and act from the first negative temperature announcement. The last flowers will be cut by necessity: they will make sumptuous bouquets.
October in the greenhouse
Check the proper operation of the greenhouse where you shelter your frosty stews. The set must be disinfected with bleach (canopies and tablets included). Leave on for one day, closing everything before rinsing with clean water.
Air well, then take in the plants.
Brush the pots and apply anti-scalp bait to avoid getting the undesirable gastropods.
Test the possible heating mode.
In a sheltered corner, bury in the sand the buckets of summer cuttings of trees and shrubs.
The seedlings are too poorly rooted to be planted and the buckets are too small to survive the cold.
What to do in the ornamental garden in october
October is the month of flames for many foliage. Their color is sometimes uneven, depending on weather conditions.
Help nature by watering the best candidates, at the beginning of the month, if it's dry!
Protection of dahlias in October
No worries if a jelly blackened dahlias. The strains are not affected.
Cut the stems immediately to prevent the rot from spreading and tearing the plants without delay.
For the feet recovered under normal conditions, work in good weather, so that the earth is easily detached from the stumps.
Cut the stems short and leave a few days in the shelter.
Too neglected, the labeling allows however to put the plants in the right place as spring approaches.
Store the smallest tubers in dry sand. They will be protected.
Gladiolus care in autumn
Easier to treat, gladiolas can often be picked up by hand. At first, keep the foliage, they are easy to handle.
Spread everything on a table or newspaper and let it dry.
Remove the shriveled bulbs (located under the new, well pink) by turning dryly.
Collect the many bulblets: they will spend the next season in rows, in the kitchen garden, to grow at ease.
Winterize the cannas
Cannas are prolific. Lighten their rhizomes by keeping only the end ones. They stand out easily, like those of the iris gardens. Keep them in a place not too dry.
What to do in the garden in October
Keep the best of summer flavors cool. A few simple steps are enough to keep them intact.
Parsley, coriander, chervil and chives will disappear.
Pick the last stalks and chisel them in ice cube trays.
Pack well and cover with water.
Store them in sachets, in the freezer.
Pumpkins and squash must be picked perfectly ripe, without injury, and kept with their peduncle.
Stored in an airy place free from frost, they will keep for several months.
Keep root vegetables
All root vegetables (carrots, parsnips, beets, etc.) are stored in silos.
Otherwise, a box of sand placed in a corner of the garage will serve as a makeshift silo.
Ensure that the sand is dry and that the top layer is at least 10 cm thick.
The onions keep well, if they are not too big (sign that they are full of water) and provided with thick skins.
The yellows are the best candidates for conservation, but the reds, resist until the beginning of the year, unlike a legend.
Keep the beans
The beans should dry perfectly to preserve themselves. You can choose between shelling them or leaving them whole.
Half dried must be shucked as soon as harvested and frozen to keep their finesse.
To ripen the last tomatoes
Do not lose the last tomatoes in the garden. To ripen them, defrost the feet and lay them on a bed of straw. The fruits will benefit from the last climbs of sap. Thus, they can stay until the first frost.
