To paint with the brush to rechampir

The modern (round) brushes to paint are perfectly adapted to the types of current paintings. However, if the professional uses them fluently, the hobbyist prefers to book them for delicate work, such as painting woodwork, angles, for the execution of fittings, or for the painting of small panels. As a result, we present you in the following photo lesson, the technique adapted to their use.

Necessary material

  • Round and flat brushes
  • Truck or ferry
  • Wire
  • Sandpaper
  • Brush to rechampir
  • Cover (cardboard, coating knife, adhesive tape)

Steps

  1. Preparation of a brush during the first use
  2. Method to paint with a brush
  3. Repainting a door with a brush

Preparation of a brush during the first use

Roll up the bristles before first use

Roll up the bristles before first use

1. Before using a brush (round or flat) for the first time, flip the bristles several times to remove loose hairs. In addition, before using them for the first time, keep the brushes in white spirit or linseed oil for 24 hours, especially if they are intended to spread oil or glycerophthalic paint, which will improve the flexibility of bristles.

First dip the hairs in the paint to the ferrule

2. Never stir the paint with the brush. This one would be overloaded, the paint would cover the handle, fall on the floor, and you would do a bad job. To load the brush, first dip the bristles in the paint, to the shell.

3. Then wring the brush on the edge of the truck (on both sides if it is a flat brush, turning the handle for a round brush).

Dip the hair in the first third

4. Now dip the hairs into the paint again, but up to one-third of their length. Painting, in abundance on the bristles, might dry and harden near the ferrule during work. This would make cleaning very difficult at the end of the work.

Spin again on the edge of the truck

5. Wring again before painting. There are other ways to load a brush, for example using a tray with splines, or a spin screen, as for a roll.

Another method: pulling a wire across the opening of the truck

6. A good method is to tie a wire across the opening of the truck. This avoids picking up with the brush the skins and impurities that may be on the edge of the truck. In addition, you will easily put the brushes when necessary.

Method to paint with a brush

Vertical passage from top to bottom after horizontal passage

Vertical passage from top to bottom after horizontal passage

1. After brushing horizontally, pass it vertically, crossing the first lines. Do not press too hard: hold the brush softly, almost perpendicular to the surface.

Then pass from bottom to top without too much support

2. If you crush it, your brush will "cordera", that is to say that the trace of the bristles will mark the painting, as well as if you reload it before having smoothed the surface in progress

3. This first painted rectangle should not be too big (although its surface obviously depends on the size of the brush); usually count about half a square meter. Finish with a horizontal passage.

Smooth the surface without pressing the brush

4. Then smooth the surface without repainting. Perform the smoothing with the end of the bristles of the brush, without pressing too much (it is essential to proceed immediately to the smoothing of the painted rectangle, because if it began to dry, the paint film would be impossible to smooth). Notice on the photo the different way of holding the brush. You will progress by then painting another rectangle next to the first, proceeding in exactly the same way. Plan to leave a little paint on the wall to join the two surfaces, which must also be smoothed, so that the uniformity of the paint layer is perfect, and that the rectangles are well melted.

Flat brush painting

5. The use of a flat brush obeys exactly the same rules, and for a flat surface nothing differentiates in the results the use of a round brush and that of a flat. In both cases, we must "draw" the paint but with modern paintings drying faster, we should not exaggerate the exercise on pain of seeing the painting "cording" (not being enough flexible, the painting reveals the features of the bristles of the brush). This technique makes it possible, on the one hand, to obtain a thin (one speaks of a film) and regular film and, on the other hand, to save paint.

Smoothing with a wide brush

6. For large areas, you can use a wide flat brush, respecting the same principles. If, despite the precautions, the brush loses a hair, remove it immediately with the end of the bristles; painting spreading will remove the trace of the hair. Do not wait until the paint is dry, because the mark will not go away anymore; a retouch at this time always gives very bad results, and it is often necessary to spend another layer.

Repainting a door with a brush

Sanding moldings caught with wood pulp

1. If the paint conceals the stains of the walls and woodwork by covering them, do not think that it can also hide the defects of the surface, especially in the case of a brush painting, which is particularly "drawn". If it is not essential to strip all the old paint, it is necessary to catch, with the help of plaster or wood paste (for our example), imperfections too marked. Always sand carefully after drying the plaster.

Using a sanding block for flat parts

2. Use a sander or sander for flat parts. Remember to dust off properly after sanding. The particular layout of the moldings requires to hold the sandpaper directly in hand, pinched between two fingers for the rounds of hump.

3. If you want to decorate the painting of your doors, cupboards or even walls, by painting nets and moldings in a particular shade, use a rechampir brush which, tapered at its end, allows fine lines. There are small ones for the execution of very fine nets and small patterns. Beware, however, of the faults of harmony between the colors. Some paint manufacturers publish shade harmony guides that can help you. If you know how to paint, you can venture to work by show of hands. Better not to press, because it paralyzes the movement of the hand. Work frankly and smoothly, and collect your memories from the drawing class.

4. It is often safer to use a cardboard or plastic cover to protect the part that should not be painted.

Paint the space between the two moldings

5. Wait until the nets are dry to paint the rest of the door; this will prevent you from mixing colors. Spread the paint with the wide brush when you can: you can also use a cache to better guide you and especially avoid overflowing.

6. Again, use the rechampir brush to paint at the edge of the net. You can also use a coating knife or a plastic spatula to act as a cover. Also use adhesive paper if the paint is dry and it will not come with the paper when you take off. Before removing the adhesive, wait for the new paint to start drying, but not completely. There are also small flat brushes for the nets that can be dragged along the edge of a ruler temporarily fixed by two points along the molding to paint. Take enough paint to trace the net as much as possible at one time.
