This landscaping makes the most of the variety of shades and formats of the reconstituted stone. Four days are enough for two experienced handymen to realize it, including foundations.
Cost: about 2,000 €
(foundations, pavers, fountain,
siphon off bench)
Time: 4 days
Equipment: rope, spade,
bubble level, spray gun
cartridge, scrub brush,
hacksaw, bricklayer tools,
vibrating plate, grinder,
concrete mixer, drill, mixer...
Located on a slightly sloping ground, the terrace (3 x 3 m) is lined with a wall that incorporates two planters. The fountain leans against the largest, 90 cm high: monumental without being too imposing (H. 125 x W 120 x P. 72 cm), this model comes in kit with two bucket bars and a spout pourer, replaced here by a brass faucet. The emptying system (to be envisaged in addition) consists of a floor drain and a PVC tube Ø 40 mm, opening in a look connected to the evacuation network of the house.
A pavement grouted with polymer sand composes the floor of the terrace. It is reached by a large step decorated with pebbles. The jambs and the seat of the bench have been resized to the desired dimensions and finished at the boucharde. The perimeter of the terrace is delimited by a line stretched on iron rods planted at each corner. The surface is then disbursed about twenty centimeters deep, except at the location of the fountain (at least 30 cm). Weighing around 230 kg, the structure requires a solid and stable base (stonework surmounted by a concrete base 15 cm thick).
Concrete dosed at 300 kg / m3
Once the bottom of the excavation is equalized, the steps follow one another: sealing belt blocks on a concrete bed (300 kg / m3) and laying of a geotextile sheet to prevent upwelling of soil and roots, while allowing runoff to drain (covering the strips by 15 to 20 cm). When the concrete has set, the draining hedgehog can be established: everything compacted so as to create a flow gradient of 2 cm / m towards the access step. The thickness of the stones must reach at least 15 cm at the lowest point of the terrace. For compaction, it is better to use a vibrating plate (available for rent).
1 INSTALLATION OF BELT BLOCKS
Wall blocks exist in single or double modules of the same height, but of varying lengths.
Place the blocks on a concrete bed (3 cm thick). They are 10 mm apart and aligned along the chalk line.
The concrete must be allowed to settle, before smoothing out the all-comer and continuing the assembly with the mortar.
The thin-set mortar is available in white powder to be tempered, 5 to 6 liters of clean water per 25 kg bag. Mix on the mixer mounted on a drill set at slow speed. Let stand 5 to 10 minutes before use. To avoid losses, prepare appropriate quantities for the open time indicated on the package. Since the cement is corrosive to the skin, wear gloves!
Scrape back the cement-glue as it is laid and clean the interstices in preparation for the grouting. The tools are easy to clean with water (to be done often) as long as the product is fresh.
2 FOUNTAIN OF THE FOUNTAIN
Locate the location of the fountain and the floor drain, which must be in the center of the tray. A space was provided between the belt blocks to pass the PVC tube and connect it to the buried look.
Reinforce the siphon to give the PVC pipe a slope of 3 cm / m towards the evacuation sight. Adjust the grid and seal the assembly with a concrete more loaded with cement (350 kg / m3).
The base of the fountain is made by adding concrete, which you tamp as you go. The shape is checked using a template cut into a rigid panel (melamine agglomer or other).
The height of the plinth, flattened with a trowel, must coincide with that of the finished pavement. The bottom of the receiver will be curved mortar, after assembly, to ensure a good flow of water.
3 CONSTRUCTION OF THE MARKET AND GARDENERS
The march is part of the belt wall (16 cm high). In anticipation of the cobble decoration (or "calade"), stop the filling concrete 2 cm from the level of the blocks.
To form the bottom of the planters, the belt is lined and filled with concrete. The assembly is done first on two rows, height corresponding to the small planter. Alignment and level are systematically checked.
Continue assembly of the large planter (3 additional rows). The interior walls are lined with the mortar, whose water repellency will form a waterproof coating during drying.
4 REALIZATION OF JOINTS
The grouting is done the next day (mortar ready for use). Its open time is one hour, for a yield of about 3 kg per square meter. Apply the product by hand filling the joints until refusal. Wear gloves required!
As soon as the joints begin to harden, pass the brush to remove the excess. The blocks take a slightly glossy patina, the binders of the mortar reinforcing the shades.
The drying time of the joint mortar varies from 2 to 12 hours depending on the ambient temperature. Until it hardens, contact with water may damage it. It is better to avoid grouting in wet weather!
5 INSTALLATION OF PAVERS AND ROLLERS
Arrange pavers with joints of 10 to 15 mm. Start at one corner of the deck to finish at the base of the fountain.
Do not walk on the pavement without intercaling a board. Adjust the alignments with a flat blade screwdriver. If necessary, remove or add some sand or screen to adjust the level.
Trace the cuts taking into account the joints. The reconstituted stone is cut to the bricklayer's chisel, the cattail or the grinder.
Seal the access step pebbles with a greasy mortar consisting of one volume of cement for two and one half of sand and one half of water. Press the pebbles by hand and flatten the surface with a trowel.
When the mortar begins to harden, clean the pebbles and wall blocks with a damp sponge, without being soggy. Rinse the sponge often with clean water and allow to dry.
6 ASSEMBLY OF THE FOUNTAIN
Seal the base block on the base with thin-set mortar. The 2 notches are for the bucket bars.
The upper blocks are put to putty-adhesive for outdoor use (Sikaflex type).
The weight of the element is sufficient to ensure adhesion. Set the position with small mallet strokes.
The elevation ends with the installation of the pediment. He caps the pre-drilled block for the tap.
Then seal the receiver blocks to the mortar on the base. To assemble them together and to the vertical elements, use the cartridge sealant. Adjust the flare and clean all the burrs (whitespirit). The bars fit into the notches, without sealing.
Install the faucet in the intended location and connect the water supply. The owners opted here for a flexible hose (removable in winter).
Stabilize the pavers with the mason's lady or the vibrating plate. Pour and rub the polymer sand into the brooms in the joints. Remove the excess, sprinkle in rain and let the joints harden.
