Preparation of walls and ceilings for paneling

Difficulty level

Easy

Tools and materials needed

Cleats of wood at least 2m long and 10mm thick (roof slats are perfect).
Ankles.
Screws.
A drill.
Drills adapted to the material of your wall.
Wood drills.
A spirit level.

Step 1: laying the cleats

The network of cleats must always be perpendicular to the direction of installation of the paneling.
An interval of 50 cm must be respected between the cleats.

For the vertical installation of the paneling, the cleats must be fixed horizontally. For the horizontal installation of the paneling, the cleats must be fixed vertically. For sloping (say 45 degrees) paneling, the cleats must be set at 45 degrees of inclination perpendicular to the desired direction for the paneling boards.

Step 2: trace the location of the cleats on the wall.

It is advisable to be two for this step.
Using a chalk line, a spirit level, and a mason ruler, reproduce the pattern of the cleat placement plan on your wall.

Step 3: preparing the cleats

You then need to pre-drill the cleats with a wood drill of the same diameter as the ankle that you will use thereafter.
You will make holes every 60 cm.

Once the cleats are drilled, align them on your markings and then drill the wall at the holes to mark the location of the dowels.

Step 4: fix the cleats

To fix the cleats to the wall, it is necessary to screw them in a peg adapted to the nature of the material and the wall.
For walls or partitions made of concrete, dressed stone, rubble, or solid brick, you will use standard dowels with double fins or anti-rotation pins.
For partition walls made of hollow bricks, plaster or blocks, you will use expansion anchors made of nylon, plastic or metal.
For cellular concrete walls, use plastic or metal dowels with large threads. In all cases, the diameter of the hole and the diameter of the ankle must be identical (except for soft materials such as plaster, or the drilling diameter must be one millimeter less than that of the ankle).
Drill the wall and insert the dowel and install the cleat against the wall, ensuring that the alignment of the holes and the dowel are respected. Finally, attach the cleats to the ankles with a screw that you will pass through the holes of the cleat.
