Tapping involves marking threads (or no screws) inside a drilled hole to receive a bolt. This job runs using taps. It takes some experience to tap properly: train on scrap metal to acquire the knack. The knowledge of this technique allows many achievements, since it is the prerequisite for any bolting.

1. The equipment needed for tapping, relatively small, consists of just three taps and a turret. The drill and drill are used to drill the pilot hole. Taps, cylindrical tools with a tapered hardened steel section, always go in threes: a roughing, an intermediate and a finisher. The roughing tap is sharper than the paver tap, which is almost not. The combs of the taps bite into the metal and thus hollow the thread. The turret, a steel tool, has two handles and a central jaw where the square tail of the tap is lodged.

2. Drill a pilot hole in the workpiece, after attaching it to the media tray and locating the center of the hole. To tap a hole of large diameter in a thick piece, it is necessary to drill a first hole with a small drill. The diameter of the pilot hole is a little difficult to determine: it must be slightly smaller than the nominal diameter of the screw (and slightly greater than the theoretical internal diameter of the nut corresponding to the screw). If you are drilling a blind hole, it must be slightly deeper than the length intended for tapping.

3. Start tapping with the roughing tap, turning the spindle. Use a square to control the perpendicularity of the tap relative to the workpiece. The beginning of the tapping is the most difficult moment: you have to weigh on the left-hand spindle so that the tool bites into the metal and shapes the first threads. Once these are dug, they serve as a guide to the tool that progresses more easily. To avoid blocking the tap, it is necessary to make frequent returns with the turntable to the left.

4. It is essential to lubricate frequently to promote penetration. Do not over force the tap; this tool breaks quite easily, and it is difficult to remove a broken tap in a hole. Use an ordinary lubricating oil. When the roughing tap has reached the desired depth, work with the middleman and then with the finisher.

5. When the thread is finished, screw the bolt into the threaded hole. If you encounter significant resistance, do not force. Remove the bolt and work again with the paver tap. The tapping must be done over a slightly longer length than that of the screw thread of the bolt.
