By diversifying, the shower tray becomes important and steals the show at the bathtub. To combine comfort and accessibility, its access lowers closer to the ground, the Italian.

Buy a large shower tray

Practical and functional, the shower has more and more followers. The shower tray or shower tray easily fits into the powder room instead of or in addition to a bathtub. But before buying one of these ever flatter models, always larger, some parameters are to know.

Between 2 and 6 cm thick

Flat, ultra-thin, ultra-thin... whatever its qualifier, the new generation catcher is thinner and bigger.
Alternative solution to the so-called walk-in shower, it is less restrictive to implement and more affordable. Its thickness oscillates between 2 and 6 cm for the visible part (against 10 to 16 cm of ordinary) and it can be embedded to be flush with the ground. If its installation generates work as important as for the installation of a walk-in shower (disbursement or raising of the ground), it does not require sealing works: a simple system of protection to the water under tiling (SPEC) is necessary.

Simplified implementation and maintenance

On the maintenance side, it is sufficient to renew the silicone seal at the periphery of the tank, whereas the joints of a tiling tank require a serious and regular cleaning and a renewal every three to five years. Finally, the extra-flat tray allows technical visits and is easily removed.
Whether you want to make a comfortable shower or optimize the space, the receiver adapted to your project depends on the position of the evacuation. There are two types: the side siphon, which is present on the vast majority of installations, and the vertical siphon, which allows easy installation and showers on one level.

Bungs for all needs

The position of the bung on the receiver is not standardized, it can be located in an angle, in the center or on one of the sides.
An aspect not to be overlooked, because a bung placed in the center is not necessarily comfortable and will be trampled with each use. Its location also makes it possible to calculate the length and slope of the drain pipe. Be aware that to ensure a sufficient flow, the evacuation should ideally respect a slope of 3 cm / m. More and more models have a bung on the width which, when the shower replaces a bathtub, facilitates the work by limiting the number of bends required.
The small thickness of the receivers imposes a large flow and therefore a bung of Ø 90 mm against a Ø 60 in general and an evacuation of greater diameter (50 mm against 40 usually).

The ability to respond to layout choices

If you do not have a vertical discharge or a sufficient horizontal slope and you want to install a tray in continuity with the tiles, it is possible to realize a platform. In this case, it is better to contrast the levels so that they are visually easy to spot. This helps prevent falls. Finally, if shower enclosures must be installed, it must be ensured that the dimensions of the receiver will allow them to be mounted.

Which type of pose to choose?

The raised pose

laying a raised catcher

This is the most common and easiest type of installation. The receiver is installed on base or feet (concealed by a covering).
The connection is carried out indifferently on an evacuation located laterally or vertically.
No masonry work is necessary.

The laying on the ground

laying a shower tray

The receiver is placed on the ground and requires a vertical (in the ground) or recessed lateral evacuation.
The realization of a small trench may be necessary in order to set up the bung and the evacuation.

Recessed installation

install a recessed receiver

The installation is done under the ground level and allows a level access to the shower. The recess can be edge to edge or overlap. In the first case, the tray is set on lean mortar pads. A foam seal and a seal are placed at the junction of the tank and the ground, then covered with a silicone fungicide seal. In the second case, the tiling comes to cover the tank, a foam seal and another sealing are placed at the junction of the tray and the floor, the glued tile is placed astride the edge of the tray and the floor. A finishing gasket (silicone) is placed at the junction of the two materials.

Anti-slip treatments

In addition to regular maintenance and the possible implementation of a support bar whose size is equal to the generous dimensions of the receiver, it is possible to opt for a non-slip coating to limit falls. When the tray is not treated or is not sufficiently slip resistant, it is possible to buy a complementary coating. Whether it is self-adhesive tape or resin to be applied by roller, the reported abrasive surface will tend to get dirty. When a non-slip option is offered by the manufacturer, although this solution is more expensive, it is more effective and durable than a method reported later.

Accessible to people with reduced mobility

A 120 x 90 cm catcher is considered by the regulations to be accessible to persons with reduced mobility when it is chamfered or with a rounded edge (inside + outside) less than or equal to 2 cm.

A diversity of materials and prices

The first prices are around 300 €. In this case they are acrylic receivers. Their lightness makes them easy to handle and install by a single person. But to wear, they tend to tarnish and are subject to scratches. The more work needed to set up the bin, the better it is to turn to a quality receiver. In this case it is better to plan a budget accordingly or opt for a ceramic receiver.
This traditional material still represents, according to brands, 60 to 70% of sales. Resistant and easy to maintain, it is certainly the best material in terms of price / quality ratio. For their part, the receivers made of synthetic materials, resin or composite mineral, are of a very variable quality.
Each manufacturer puts forward their own patented material. Be careful, they do not all resist bleach or hair dye products! More rare, but solid and proven: enamelled steel. Proposed by few brands (Bette, Kaldewei, Roca), it is a very good value for money: for example, the receiver "Superplan" Kaldewei (120 x 90 cm) costs 808 €, but it is guaranteed 30 years!
Finally, beyond the decorative aspect, the choice of material must take into account the ease of maintenance. So distrust the trend of colorful recipients: the limestone water leaves white marks.
