- Practical advice
The cupboards are full of objects of all kinds that we do not decide to throw. It is sometimes useful to imagine a new use, as here, with these vinyl records that adorn two bedside tables designed in a few hours.
The climax of the CD in the 1990s has ousted the tape cassette and vinyl record. But the black cake has not completely disappeared. We still find second hand in record stores, garage sales, flea markets or websites classified ads...
Great source of inspiration
Some music lovers consider these microgroove discs as real pearls, because you must know that the information is engraved on the medium - unlike the CD - thus offering a warmer sound and closer to the original recording.
You can sell your most wanted vinyls and recycle those that do not interest anyone. The reconversion ideas are not lacking: set of table, shelf with one or more floors, carryevues, clock (the orifice being very convenient to pass the axis which connects the needles to the mechanism), furniture (stool, coffee table or bedside...).
Black discs, soft nights
Here, two 33 laps are the pretext to create original bedside tables, intended for a child's room (which can just as well embellish another room of the house as the living room).
To form the trays of each table, two rounds are cut to the size of the discs (30 cm in diameter) in a board of good thickness (here a drop of medium of 18 mm of thickness).
Rather than buy a standard size panel, it is better to focus on the falls than DIY superstores (GSB) offer for sale for a few euros.
If you have the choice, it is better to opt for materials that lend themselves easily to this type of realization as the medium (or MDF, medium density fiberboard).
MDF: ideal material for making furniture
Derived from wood, MDF has many advantages. Economical when purchased, it is easy to plan, sand and paint. In addition, it does not deform, can receive any finish and easily replaces the raw wood. Each tray rests on three cylindrical feet equipped with fixing plates, bought in GSB (about 3 € / piece). Feet adjustable in height (9 € / piece) can also do the trick. But a solid wooden rod, which hangs in the garage, can be used to make feet. Then simply buy wooden brackets (pre-drilled) to the diameter of the curtain rod, fix them on the underside of the trays and screw the rod sections through the tray.
Step-by-step tutorial for making a coffee table with a vinyl record:
On a drop of MDF, place both discs diagonally. Trace their circumference with a pencil.
For a diameter of 30 cm, use a board about 70 x 70 cm.
The path should be near the edge to facilitate cutting by singing with a jigsaw.
If not, make a hole (drill) on the track to slide the blade of the saw.
Before cutting, clamp the medium on a workbench taking care to place the clamp in the round.
Rotate the assembly by moving the clamp while cutting.
To catch the irregularities of the rounded cut (eccentric sander, sanding wedge...) and continue the sanding to give more softness to the plate.
Sanding increases the adhesion of the coating, apply directly the first coat of paint, then after complete drying, pass the second coat.
After drying, return the trays and draw a triangle to screw the feet equidistant.
Use self drilling screws for medium for easy screwing.
Clean the faces to stick discs and lay a layer of glue on each tray.
With a spatula, spread the glue so as to cover the entire surface homogeneously
Stick the vinyls to the right.
The glue allows repositioning during the first two hours.
Apply weight or clamp the discs to the clamps during drying.
• Use preferably 33 rpm or max 45 rpm. Their diameter of 30 cm offers a more generous surface than the other formats: 25, 17, 15 cm.
• For gluing, use neoprene glue or putty-glue. But for the first, the decision is final and it is therefore not possible to refocus a poorly positioned disk. As for the putty-glue, it allows a repositioning in the first minutes (pay attention to the extra thickness between the plate and the vinyl).
