The price of quality
the low-profile shower tray and building boards of various thicknesses are composed of an extruded polystyrene foam core coated on both sides with a fiberglass mesh coated with a plastified mortar manufactured by the German company Wedi.
The quality of this type of product has a price. A receiver (90 x 120 cm) costs approx. 225 euros; a wall doubling panel (250 x 60 x 1.25 cm thick) costs € 192 (four are used on this site).
In this former pavilion, the bathroom was limited to a dilapidated corner catcher surrounded by a curtain. To create a welcoming space, the owners have opted for a walk-in shower (without ferry) that offers more ease than a traditional shower.
Two shower systems are currently available on the market. The first is a ready-to-install waterproofing system (Lazer "Isotanche" kit). It includes a bung welded to a PVC membrane, all embedded in a cast mortar (provide a slope of flow). The other solution is an extruded polystyrene panel. Equipped with a watertight flow, it has a pre-formed slope which makes its installation easy and reliable ("Wedi Fundo" by Wedi). It is this extra-flat (4 cm) shower tray with shower walls to be tiled which is retained on our site. The set is mounted to the location of the original shower.
The floor to review
In this room, the floor is unstable. To ensure a good flatness, it should be deposited, nail a sheet of metal fiber on the joists and pour a concrete on the entire floor. But, faced with the magnitude of the work, the owners give up and look for an alternative.
At the shower location, the floor is sawn and removed. A water-repellent particle board is installed at the receiver's location. In the long term, the owners plan to replace the entire floor with teak parquet glued to water-repellent panels.
Note: to establish the height of the receiver, it was necessary to take into account the difference in level. The floor of the shower is not completely level at the time of construction.
Prepare the seat and the dressing
The dimensions of the extra-flat tray condition the overall dimensions of the bathroom. For a 90 x 120 cm element and a 7 cm thick partition, the floor area to be removed is 97 x 122 cm. Cutting is done with a jigsaw and the joists are leveled by screwing cleats along their length.
The construction of a plasterboard partition requires a solid foundation. It is made with rafters. Cut on demand, they are fixed perpendicular to the joists by long screws. The two corner walls are then lined with 12.5 mm thick (Wedi) building panels (dimension well adapted to BA13 sheets (13 mm thick).The installation is identical to that of a classic dubbing.
Lay the receiver
To install the syphoid bung, a small formwork is made in the center of the wooden seat. cut in the middle too, the waterproof panel is screwed on the joist. For connection to the main collector (here, on the lower floor), the drain outlet is glued to a PVC drain pipe (vertical). The whole is positioned and then sealed with mortar.
The back of the receiver is coated with tile adhesive and then applied to the waterproof backing board. introduced into the bung body, an accordion sleeve seals. To avoid counterfloors, plate the catcher well and check the levels.
Watertightness and assembly of partitions
For a better working comfort, the watertightness is carried out before the assembly of the partitions (it is possible to realize it when the cabin is already assembled). The system is provided by reinforced strips and preformed plastic corners. Bonded between the receiver and the cladding panels, the elements are "sandwiched" between two layers of tile adhesive (or Wedi cement). Seals placed between two consecutive panels complete the seal.
The construction of the watertight plasterboard partition 2.10 m high is traditional. Make the horizontal and vertical seals as before. In finishing, two quarter-round stainless steel rods are glued to the edges of the partition.
Finishes and accessories
Once the cabin tiled, it is equipped with a mixer and a shower system with two apples, then closed by a glass swing door. Details of operations:
- Mosaic plates on weft (tiles 20 x 20 mm) dress the receiver and the walls. They are simply put on a bed of glue. To grout, use a slip prepared from water-repellent product. Note that the bung turn requires some cut-outs a little complicated, made with water saw.
- The mixer of the old shower is kept but the two pipes of water supply, of too small section, are replaced by conduits of Ø 14, with sleeve 15 x 21 brazed. Protected by ducts, the pipes are recessed before the installation of the wall panels. Be sure to center the mixing valve in the middle of the cabin.
- The shower column is equipped with a tall apple and a flexible shower head. From the mixer tap, a two-way valve supplies one or the other. The assembly comes down to the installation of two metal supports for the column.
The glass door
The securit glass swivel doors (6 mm thick) are generally reversible (opening to the right or left), and the extensible mounting posts depending on the receiver. Example, for a receiver of 90 cm, the dimensions vary from 88.5 to 91.5 cm. Here, the door consists of a narrow glass panel attached to the wall by a profile on which is fitted a movable flap hinged by two hinges.
Create a healthy medium
Demolish the old shower. It is easier to break the receiver mounted on breeze blocks rather than to the wall. The tiles are removed with chisel and hammer.
Replace the supply pipes with new sheathed tubes. Solder two elbow sleeves (15 x 21). They must adapt to the center distance of the mixer (150 mm). Plaster the bleeding.
Cut the floor according to the exact right of the future shower. Then make the support of the plasterboard partition: fix rafters to the old joists with long screws inserted at an angle.
Dress the corner walls with Wedi panels. Apply to the adhesive mortar placed in blocks on the back of the panel. Plate and check the verticality at the bubble level.
Seal the bung
Make a box of formwork using 2 sleepers and 2 cleats supporting the pierced bottom. To find the horizontality of the joists, screw cleats on the side. Treat the wood.
Screw the water-repellent panel onto the joists after having cut in the center a square to the dimensions of the formwork. at the outlet of the bung, stick a piece of PVC pipe.
Introduce the PVC pipe into the formwork hole. Position the bung and seal it with mortar. Its upper flange must extend beyond the plane of the panel by 2 mm.
Equip and install the catcher
The evacuation system:

The receiver groove receives the O-ring (1) which will carry the collar ring. A key (3) makes it possible to screw the sealing sleeve (4) on the underside, on the thread of the ring.
Glue the underside of the tray with tile adhesive. Equalize with the notched spatula of 6 mm. Placing the receiver on the drain: the sleeve is introduced into the bung.
The bung outlet crosses the ceiling of the ground floor and a partition to join the general pipe, with a slope of 1 cm / m. A false ceiling will hide the work.
The installation of the receiver is the operation that requires the most care because it is to avoid potential leakage. The bung and the exit tube (difficult to access afterwards) must be perfectly glued. Make sure that the bung body is centered: the sealing sleeve must penetrate without difficulty.
It is recommended to coat the inlet of the sleeve with a little silicone sealant.
Treat the tightness
Use a sealing kit. Compose a fluid paste with the powder and the catalyst liquid. Apply with a spatula in a corner of the wall. Place the three-dimensional piece provided. A second layer drowns the frame.
Bring the angles and the receiver-panel junctions together by sealing tape between two layers of dough. Mark the angle. Continue with vertical stripes.
Make the partition and the cladding
Mount the watertight plasterboard partition on the prepared seat. Nick the bottom wall for a good grip. Two stainless steel rods will border the edges.
Tile the booth with mosaics on weft (20 x 20 mm). Start with the catcher and continue on the walls. Cut out the location of the bung, place the grid.
Install the door
Fix two U-shaped profiles (supplied) on the walls with stainless steel screws. Check their verticality. One will support a transom of glass on which the door leaf is articulated. The other will serve as a stop. Plastic rods complete the seal and absorb shocks when closing the door.
Two inner flanges form the hinges. They hold the glass door with Allen screws. Shims provided adjust the height of the wing.
The shower column: installation details
Screw the mixer with its seals onto the sealed outlets in the wall. Present the column in the axis of the mixer. Position the two supports, the top one at 8 cm from the tile border.
To install a support, drill a Ø 6 mm hole in the tiles. Thread and screw the brass log. Style the entire cup and hollow support. Tighten the set screw on the side. Install the column.
