In contrast to British gardens, French gardens are always enclosure. The type of fence depends directly on the style of the garden and its environment. It aims to mark the boundaries of the property, but also to protect lawns, massive and possibly crops. The equipment used to enclose a garden will vary considerably depending on whether it is in the countryside or in a suburban suburban area. In the first case, it may be for example to protect the lawn against livestock (barbed wire), horses (fence in slabs), game (roasting). In the second, it will simply limit the lawn by means of a barrier or a fence. Doors and gates will be related to the style of the fence used.

Fences in barbed wire
Unfortunately, barbed wire is still widely used in rural areas, in all places where the garden is threatened by the intrusion of livestock, particularly cattle. While not very aesthetic, this type of fence nevertheless has the advantage of a rustic character, and that of melting quickly in the landscape.
The equipment used and the technique required are elementary. This type of fence is composed of poles stuck in the ground, between which three or four rows of barbed wire are stretched. Although it is possible to use cement poles, it will be advantageous to take poles in wood The concrete poles, although armed with metal, have a tendency to splinter or even break at the foot, which will be better able to withstand the beating of a cow or an ox. Chestnut or oak poles, which resist rotting for a very long time, are preferred. It is useless to take bastaing: simple branches or trunks of medium section form excellent round poles. One of the ends, which will be stuck in the ground, is then squared in point. To hold well in the ground, each pole must be pressed on the third of its height total. The depressed part obviously suffers the aggression of the earth and may rot prematurely; it should therefore be protected by means of a product fungicide and insecticide Trade. The posts will be spaced 3 meters apart, so that the wires are perfectly tensioned. These will be fixed using studs arranged (relative to the wire) between two sets of spades, which must be naturally placed outside to the area (garden) to protect. The posts ofextremities (orangle) are generally equipped with a strenght leg ; it is on them that the section of wire to which the tensioner will be attached will be fixed. The attachment must be very strong to allow tension. It takes a wrench or a pair of pliers to act on the tensioner.
Fences in slabs and boards
If the cattle and goats do not fear the pikes of the barbed wire, the situation is quite different for the horses who could be hurt by their contact. It is also important to know that any passerby who injures himself on a barbed wire fence along a public road may owner's responsibility.
The fence in slabs is a fairly economical way to achieve a rustic fence.
The slabs in fact are sawing cuttings (bark side) resulting from the flow of the planks. You will find them in a sawmill at very affordable prices; they can of course be replaced by planks at least 20 mm thick, rough sawn. Your fence will be more expensive. The posts must here necessarily be bastaings of section 15 cm x 15 cm, allowing the nailing slabs or boards. The rough sawing parts of boards or posts being particularly exposed to the weather, it will not be necessary to neglect the application of a treatment product. The protection of the buried parts of the posts will be done in the same way as that mentioned previously. The wood allows multiple types of fences, more or less complicated. Logs and half-logs may be used for cross-fencing.
Investment is still relatively important here and is not suitable for large spaces.
Toasting is an effective way to close a garden, both to protect him from game (rabbits in particular) than pets. It can be blamed for its rather unattractive appearance, although there are now products that are discrete (plastic or green plasticized mesh), or more pleasing to the eye (white plasticized mesh). The installation of a fence goes through the establishment of stakes wood, concrete or metal. In principle, concrete stakes are preferably used which are provided with fixing rings. The grating is not hooked on the posts themselves, but fixed on stretched iron wires, and connected to the posts by means of their rings. The tension of these threads is ensured in the same way as that of the barbed threads, that is to say by means of turnbuckles. Key turnbuckles are sometimes replaced by simple hook-shaped accessories (see photo opposite).
No tools are needed to stretch the wire. In the case of plastic or plasticized wire mesh, care should be taken to use wire wrapped in the color of the wire itself.
Note that it is not abnormal that this kind of fence slightly relaxes in summer, during hot weather, the plastic then tend to expand a little.
Once the iron wires are tight and tight, unwind the wire that you will fix by tightening with smaller wire (annealing).
The fixing of the wire to the post must be very strong, because the wire will undergo a strong tension.
Plastic fences consisting of rigid posts and interlocking profiles are intended to limit the garden more than to protect it; still it is possible to extend the fence to prevent the passage of animals.
There are many models of plastic fences that have in common a relatively easy installation, a practically unalterable character, and a fairly high price if the lawn is large. They give it a very neat look that is close to that of stud fences composed of white painted posts and planks or concrete posts and sleepers (described below). Their solidity is however not foolproof and prohibits their use if cattle (cattle or horses) may be parked nearby.
By concrete fences is meant here the posts molded in this material, interconnected by crosspieces (two generally) horizontal made of the same material. It is therefore a material prefabricated, bought according to the surface that one has to enclore. This kind of fence, always enough expensive is suitable only to limit a space that is not threatened by game attacks, or that does not have to suffer from the presence of livestock other than horses, cows for example at risk of breaking this type of poles. However, they will be firmly implanted in the ground and will be mortared. For a better decorative look, concrete fences are usually painted in white (preferably use a painting-facade), which gives them a neat appearance but, on the other hand, puts them a little too much in evidence. Also, it is better to reserve them for supermarkets.
Today we find in the trade of rigid mesh sold by panels of 3.50 m. They are generally rectangular meshes, the metal bars of small section that compose them being laminated in principle in white. This kind of fence, quite expensive to buy, has the advantage of an excellent finish and good installation convenience.
of the metal poles are sold simultaneously with the panels, a device of clips ensuring the connection of the various elements. It is therefore sufficient to plant the posts and to proceed with the connection with the fence. of the matching portals are often offered by the manufacturer.
Such a fence has the advantage of ease of installation, but also offers all the guarantees of security since locking pieces, placed at the top of the posts, make it virtually impossible to dismantle.
