The draw guarantees the proper functioning of a stove. It is the essential call of air which makes it possible to raise the fumes in the chimney and to ensure a good combustion. If your flames are not strong enough and the wood is hard to burn, your stove has a bad draft. How to avoid these problems, how to fix them?
To avoid draft problems with a wood stove
Upon installation, certain rules must be respected. If your chimney is not straight, use 2 elbows at 45°. A 90° elbow affects the draw. Be aware that the longer a duct, the better the draft. And prefer smooth walls, which favor the evacuation of fumes.
For the exit at the level of the roof, it is necessary that the duct exceeds the ridge of the roof of 40 cm, this to withstand the winds.
Important: the location of the chimney must not be facing the wind which may return the smoke into the chimney and cause what is known as an inverted draft.
Finally, the size of the duct must be adapted to that of the fireplace. If it is too big or too small, the wood stove will have a bad draft.
The solutions to apply to improve circulation
Once you have identified the cause, there are many solutions. The most classic is casing. This is the introduction of a metal tube into the chimney flue. This tube makes it possible to adapt the duct to the dimensions of the hearth and to solve the problem of the height of the duct, at the level of the roof. To prevent the rain from entering the tube, it is capped with a conical protection. The casing, thanks to the metal of which it is made, also makes it possible to maintain a high temperature in the duct, which accelerates the evacuation of the fumes.
There are also easier solutions to implement. It is possible for example, to raise only the exit of the roof, if that is the problem, by a metallic conduit which adapts to that which already exists.
Smoke sucks is as easy to install. It adapts to the metal or masonry outlets and uses the wind energy to regulate in the duct, the depression essential for the exit of the fumes. The draft is therefore improved and soot deposition decreases accordingly.
But before thinking of work, check that the duct is not simply dirty. Respect also the two annual sweeps, obligatory. Finally think of the arrival of air at the home, is it sufficient?
